Ongoing problem with neighbours whose garden is covered with dog poo. I dont just mean a few poos. Workman clearing my gutters yesterday was horrified as he could see over the fence and said he'd counted 50 poos, this in a small yard about 20ft x 20. This has been an problem since neighbours have been there, but gets marginally better in the summer when they want to be in the garden. There is an old mattress and various other rubbish as well, which I dont care about. I have seen a rat twice in the alley running along the back of the properties in the past week. So under pressure from a friend I have spoken to the agents managing the property, asking if it was possible when they do an inspection could they be aware. I feel awful now, as it will be obvious its either me or the neighbours the other side, and I have spoken to them before about leaving a dustbin full of dog poo outside my back gate. They have not spoken to me since ! Dont want a neighbour war but its been bothering me for a long time. Now Ive been awake half the night worrying, did I do the wrong thing ?
Under Environmental Health Act it is an offence to let things build up to the point where its becoming a nuisance to neighbours.

It's a tough situation, I have a similar neighbour problem with their dogs constant barking. The dilemma is that if you say something it can make it worse but if you say nothing then they aren't likely to do anything on their own accord, if they were they'd have done it already.

As soon as you said something you are always likely to regret it, human nature I think.

No you did not do the wrong thing, you should not have to live next to such disgusting mess! If they rent the property it will be in their contract to maintain the property and keep it clean etc. It's a health hazard and I bet it can't smell very nice, not to mention the fact that it'll be unpleasant for their dog(s). How do they avoid treading in it when they go out?! Bet there's dog poo traipsed all through their house. Maybe being reported will be a wake up call for them (unlikely - in which case, maybe they'll be forced to move, so at least it'll no longer be your problem).

I would assume they’d just do a random inspection and then mention it, without letting on that’s it’s just about the garden. I think as long as they give notice they are allowed to inspect anytime. My neighbours have 2 a year.

Under Covid apparently they arent doing inspections, so dont know how long it will be before something is done, They do have to give notice but I assume if tenants know they are going to be visited at least they will clear the garden up then. Could be months away I suppose. lovely !

No you did nothing wrong PL - I would hate to live next door to that. I poo pick daily unless it is dreadful weather or I am working very long hours (not often). Otherwise it is every other day. 2 small dogs who are excercised daily x 2 seem to do a lot of poo in the garden so I could never leave it long.

Yes a lot of agents won’t be doing inspections however you can send your photo to them and ask them to address it. They will probably be contractually bound to keep the property in a tenant like manner and not to do anything with could cause a detriment to the fabric of the property-by the sounds of it this level of poo could well do so. Not to mention the nuisance clause too.

You’re doing the right thing, I hope it works x
