Hi all,

Sorry if this is in the wrong place,

I went for a walk over the weekend and passed some absolutely lovely horses. Incredible nature, which unfortunately looks to be down to the fact they were craving attention... and food.

There was a pile of hay trodden into a sectioned off area in front of a shelter. Wheelbarrows, bins etc all fallen over and trodden into the mud and one of the fences in the sectioned off area obviously broken down in an attempt to get in or out (in addition to opening in area).

4 horses/ponies in the field. 3 unrugged and literally skin and bone, I lifted the rug on the fourth and has to be the most under weight horse I have ever seen. Spent a good hour down there giving them some attention. Heart says I would like to sneak down with some food and wormers, but head says this is a no-no, so obvs won't be doing!

Now they are on estate land which is being rented out. The estate manager says that they have already been reported and are being monitored... I am not happy with this as the horses don't need monitoring, they need sorting/removing asap. There was no food, they probably need a good worm and the hooves are incredibly overgrown. I would offer to take them if the owner is struggling (on temperament and we have the space) but obviously can't contact without details.

Who do I report them to for welfare? RSPCA and I have clashed in the past on them being absolutely rubbish and the estate manager is obviously not taking it seriously.

Thanks in advance,

Pan

Thanks all,

I will report them at lunch.

I doubt I will be able to keep away from them for too long, so may give them this week and pop down next weekend to see if there is any difference.

WHW went to answerphone - always hate leaving messages and unfortunately doesn't seem to have an email for reporting. Will see if they call back or bell again tomorrow and try BHS too.

Keep trying WHW, even if you have to keep leaving messages.
They will soon get the point you want to report something quickly.

I know people shouldnt get involved but if it was me i would be taking at least hay to them and insuring they had clean water.
But obviously make it clear to the WHW that its not the owner that is feeding them!

Contact either WHW (World Horse Welfare) or BHS (British Horse Society).
Contact details below.
www.whw.org.uk
If you would like to report a horse welfare concern in the UK, please call our Welfare Line for free on 08000 480180. We encourage people to call rather than email in order to gain as much information as possible.
The Welfare Line is open from 8am - 5.30pm, Monday - Friday, with a voicemail system to take calls outside of these hours.
We endeavour to answer as many calls as possible but, unfortunately, some will go through to voicemail. We aim to return all welfare calls within the same working day so please do leave a message, clearly stating a daytime contact number, and we will return the call as soon as possible.
All calls to this number are strictly confidential and are dealt with by trained members of staff who have a knowledge of horses as well as an understanding of the relevant legislation.
When you call to report a concern, we will ask you some questions about the situation so that we can establish whether we need to pass the details to a field officer for investigation.
Once the field officer has been out to look at the horses and taken any action necessary, we always try to report back to the caller so they know we have attended and what we have been able to do.
If you have any information or concerns (either in the UK or Europe) and these are not covered by, or relevant to, either UK Welfare, Campaigns or International Training, but would still like to speak to us, then please tell us.

Have reported it to WHW now.

I don't want to get involved as if it means that the horses won't be removed then I have done more harm than good as they are a good hour drive from me and it couldn't be regular. They had plenty of water when I saw them as had been raining and the bathtub in there was full and not too dirty. The one thing I wanted to do was drive back with wormers, but again I don't know the history and don't want them removed and rewormed in a short space of time.

I didn't mention it straight off to WHW, but they have said they'll phone back with an update and will tell them then that I have space for all if the owner can't cope with them. Didn't want to come off as reporting to try and take them as have plenty already, but would willingly fit a few more in for them to have a better life
