Hi, we have a rescue greyhound which we have just adopted, she has been with us for 4 days and is amazing! I am fully expecting a settling in period for bedtimes but in the meantime was looking for some advice about overnight!

We feed her a last meal at 5pm, walk her at 6pm and again at 8pm and take her out for the last loo break at 11ish, the first night she had a wee indoors overnight, the second she had no accidents and the third she'd had a poop overnight.

I was wondering if this is her just getting used to a new overnight/morning schedule or if we should be feeding her later/earlier etc?

I certainly don't mind cleaning up after her while she's settling in but don't want to be feeding her at the wrong time leaving her no choice but to go in the night!

Many thanks in advance!

What did the rescue tell you about how clean she was in her kennel over night and how restricted is she in terms of where she sleeps? My logic (and from what I’ve seen from a friend who runs a rescue) is those which are clean overnight in their kennels (when locked in the indoor bit overnight) settle much quicker and have less accidents when restricted to a smaller space to start with so it’s more like what they’re used to if that makes sense?

Thank you, clean in her kennel and she sleeps in our kitchen. No problems with the toilet during the day, does it straight away in the garden or on walks, I was just wondering if her last meal was at a good time for holiding till morning, thank you for your help!

Not a greyhjound but whippets so very similar. They get tea about 6pm sometimes as late as 8pm if they have been out somewhere. They get walked in the morning usually. Last wees is 10pm and they dont usually ask to go out again. So I dont think you are doing anything wrong with feed/walk times.

Sorry I missed that re: last feed (it’s been a long day). My pair are whippets as well and get fed between 6pm and 8pm (normally 6 but it depends on if we’ve been out/at a comp) and they go out for last toilets between 9.30 and 10 and don’t ask to out again and Fizz often refuses to go out in the morning until 8/9am.

Thanks again! I noticed Luna didn't want to wee first thing this morning either, she waited until another 1 1/2 hours before going!

That's early! My partner finishes at 6am and they very, very rarely get up to greet him. Floyd prefers an 11am wee, Dylan is bone idle and would rather wait till 1pm, before another little nap, finally getting up around 3.30pm. Theres much huffing and puffing when they are turfed out of bed at 8am!

They get up at 6am but only because they’re greedy and it’s I feed them or they go hungry then go back to bed for a nap for as long as possible. My mum forces her out for a wee at 9am, it’s not through choice she would go longer if she was allowed 😂
