I know there are a few people on here with rescue greyhounds so thought I would ask for a bit more info...

Have always loved these dogs, and would only ever have a rescue dog. Do rescued GH's make good pets? Do they settle well to living indoors? Guess they are not housetrained when they arrive?

Any tips/advice really appreciated as this is something I am considering for next year. Have always had dogs - but never a GH!

Hi, greyhounds and lurchers make the best pets!
Most good rescues ie greyhound gap only home
dogs that have already been in foster homes so
housetraining etc will have already been started on.
Have a look on gap and give Lisa a call, she's great and
will answer all your questions.

As Skinny dogs suggests, they make fab rescue pets, as a rescue center, I will always recommend these dogs are an ideal companion, we also house train all of our's, and to be honest they pick it up pretty quickly, and they are the most laid back dogs, we deal with northeast greyhound rescue, and house aloy of their dogs, infact Rinkydink on here took a puppy greyhound from us, they needs lots of love/comfort and minimal exercise, perfect pet

They are quiet, easy to look after, very very clean around the house, and lovely gentle personalities

None of mine had ever lived in a house before, and came straight from kennels so hadnt started house training, but all of them were clean in the house from the start with no problems at all

If you speak to the rescue people (esp GRWE) they are very good at matching a dog to you - there are some which are quieter, and some like my Islay who are like Tigger on speed

You can always find one with a temperament to suit your requirements though

Second Acolyte_ and everyone else. We have 2 lurchers, one we got from GRWE and they are fab. They sleep most of the time, exercise wise they need a quick run and then are happy to lie in front of the fire all day.
 
Thanks Acolyte! I will speak to them. Do you find they are ok to leave? Obviously I won't leave a dog at home all day alone, but for shorter periods? I know some breed can be a little fretful, or god forbid destructive? I've only ever had cross breeds before.....
 
i do a lot of work for the local greyhound rescue and my friend has 2 ex-racers. they make fab pets and they're soooooo much easier than my barmy boxers or my friend's loopy lurchers. they want one or two short walks a day and then sleep the rest of the day and are quite happy to be left for a few hours. fab pets.

Yep mine have all been 100% fine to leave - sadly I work F/T so all of mine have been left for periods of time. Talisker (my rescue lurcher) has claustrophobia so needs the run of the house or he panics

We strongly suspect that is because he was ill-treated in a big way before GRWE took him in as a stray - other than that all my rescues have been fine to leave, never any noise and never any destruction or stress

Ah but yours have each other for company which is lovely for them. I could only really have one so am conscious that it wouldn't be fair to leave a lone dog for long periods. I guess they soon adjust to your routine though if they feel secure?
 
I will resist the temptation to say that two greyhounds are hardly more work than one

You are absolutely right though, I have known a few people with just one greyhound and they have been fine at home too, it is all about routine for them and greyhounds very quickly adapt to most things

U would get away with one, they are not the type of breed that crave k9 company, but they do, most importantly need, a settee, bed, super comfy duvey, cushions e,t,c

I have a two bed room "townhouse" (read, matchbox!) which is perfect for me and two dogs... but I agree with your sofa/bed comment, just be prepared to share

Talisker is stretched out along 2/3rds of the sofa whilst I am squashed at the end with my laptop tonight. Well, he is ill

not brave, just barmy like my dogs - sucker for punishment me, i've got 2 of them! talk about character. much as i think greyhounds make lovely pets - i wouldn't swap my nutters for my mate's greyhounds - i'd die of boredom - they sleep too much!

My mum used to breed boxers, I dont remember them being a lot of hard work TBH - they just used to want to fight with any other passing dog on a walk
