Rescue Horse or just one that needs a good home

I have posted about this before, I have been thinking about taking in a rescue or horse who needs a good home. I've started looking around and can't believe I haven't found one! Although thats probably a good thing Im just quite surprised.
Im preferably looking for something that can be ridden, hacked or lightly schooled. If anyone knows of anything let me know and i hope this isnt seen as advertising?!? (wrap on the knuckles if it is

I think you'll struggle finding something unless you know exactly what you want and are expecting to do with it, there are loads of horses that need rescuing or just in need a of loving secure home to live out the rest of their years but you have to be prepared to accept that they may not be able to ridden, maybe too old, or not sound enough, may also require constant medical care, special diets or come with some form of problem, which is why many end up being passed around/sold on etc.

If you looking for something to lightly hack, schooling etc, something spoil and give lots of love and time to, perhaps looking out for a older horse, you would be doing a wonderful thing by proving a good long life home, many veterans still doing RC activities well into there 20s and its one less horse that ends up at some horse sale in a sick and sorry state that nobody wants, that in a way would be rescuing (even if you bought a perfectly healthy old horse just in need of some tlc that was fit and healthy enough to be ridden) and your also getting what you'd like out of the the situation too.

What I'm trying to say is, you can rescue but you can't always expect to have a riding horse out of it, you need to choose what outcome you'd be happy with to enable you to know where to look.

You could also contact local animal shelters, horse charities and see if they have a re-homing programme, or some of the bigger well known charities.

I dont expect someone to give me a happy hacker, i have an ex race horse who is fab at hacking and completely unfazed by anything. Im just thinking that a couple of people i know have previously had to give up horses for very little money, whether with a manageable medical condition or being over horsed. I was thinking ive read some aweful stories this year and rather than looking for a horse who is already fully trained maybe i could save them from the meat man or help someone who wants a good home for an unusual horse. i've had a look on project horses and they all seem to be way out of my area and some are not really projects. It's a bit tricky!
 
I'm really no sure what sort of thing your after but if you are expienced and can put the work in or wait a year or 2 for a youngster to mature before doing some ridden work, but here's a little list! (also depends on where you are in the country!)

What about rehoming another ex racer? there are plenty that you can either pick up cheap and you would be giving them new start in life.
There are 1000's of horse being bred willy nilly and ending up in sales or kept in poor conditions and in a as long as we are buying them from sales there is demand, so they will keep on farming these ponies and breeding from them but with ex race horses, we can't really control the numbers that are bred and put through training unless racing was banned (I'm not against racing at all...just incase anyone took that comment the wrong way) but I sure people can see the point I'm making, at least it's good to know that for every horse that goes into training, one is coming out and having the chance to start a new career and at least these horses are bred for a purpose and then recylecled...so to speak

i know of a horse...
16hh, TB, 10yrs old, gelding, chestnut, excellent paces, fab dressage prospect, not novice ride if not regularly ridden, but good as gold when in work. has heart mumour but causes no problems, and was raced with it. um, lovely to handle etc.

free to a good home... actually, free to an excellent home. preferably local to cambridgeshire. xx
 
I got an email other day telling me about a 3 yr old racehorse, on bute! but was ok as a light hack free to good home, I passed over it though as wasnt sure how legit it was.

Id put an advert on Project horses as said, equine ads etc and sit back and wait.
