Hello! I am looking to rehome a rideable horse, preferably an ex-racehorse. I was looking into rescuing horses from slaughter but I have no idea where to start. There are lots of websites but I don't know which of them are good, and the seemingly good ones don't have any suitable horses available at the moment. I would love to rehome an ex-racehorse that would have otherwise been going to slaughter, for want of a better way to put it. Does anyone have any ideas where I could start my search? I'm not in a major rush as I just lost my heart horse and am absolutely devastated, but I can only keep my place at my yard for 3 months so thought it best to start looking sooner rather than later. I really am heartbroken, so want to do something meaningful like this and help a life.

In the UK sound, sane and rideable ex-racehorses don’t go for slaughter. If you¡re we’ll set up for having a TB, experienced with retraining and have good help on hand then I would contact some of your local trainers to see if they have anything coming out of racing. You'll need to pay for it, they're normally not free.

You need to understand that ending up in an abattoir is not the worst fate possible for a horse. The best way to 'rescue' is through a registered charity like World Horse Welfare

quite!

often we hear horror stories of horses coming from bin end dealers that turn out to have unsolvable problems (think blind bolting - brain tumour?) standing up on back legs til they flip themselves, seriously dangerous aggression.

Aaaaannnd that’s often why they got sent to the knacker man in the first place.

if you want to rehome a useful horse, either a TB going into or coming from training, or something that’s been assessed by a rescue. Ridden horses in rescues are few and far between.

Don't believe the sensationalist stories they print. Really, very few ex-racers are 'sent to slaughter' here, and if they are euthanased instead of rehomed it is often to prioritise the welfare of both the animal and any potential rehomer. If you are set on an ex-racehorse however there are a number of reputable organisations you can register interest with:
https://sourceahorse.ror.org.uk/find-a-horse
https://heroscharity.org/horses/ex-racehorses/
https://www.godolphinlifetimecare.com/europe/horses-available
http://racehorserehoming.co.uk/home.html
Alternatively contact trainers directly and follow their social medias and websites if they have them to see if /when horses become available.
