I am interested in rescueing a horse after hearing on the news about so many being abandoned/given up. i am struggling however to find out how to go about this. i live in scotland and live quite rural. anyone know how i would find a horse to rescue???
Thanks

I've rescued my little beauty from the RSPCA ... I was involved in the rescue every step of the way after finding her dumped and emaciated! When she was seized I was given permission to visit her at the yard she was being treated at. I had home visits and a few forms and 3 weeks later she came to live with me. She belongs to the RSPCA for the first year then she is signed over to me. They are meant to visit regularly but I haven't seen them in the five months I've had her and they didn't show up the day she arrived! Definitely worth doing! x

Try such sites as RSPCA, Bluecross, WHW, Redwings etc. I have had a quick look and cannot see the ones i have listed in your area as such but I would suggest contacting them anyway for advice. the Bluecross are pretty good and they (and the others) may well be able to point you in the direction of rescue places in your region.

Thanks for your comments. i feel the problem may be because i am so rural, and i know that they do not like their rescue animals going outwith x amount of miles.

Where abouts in scotland are you? theres a place in aboyne i think its the ilph that run it and i know for certain they rehome horses i also know of 2 rescue centres in aberdeenshire. Google willows animal sanctuary strichen and also the new arc nether aquadlie ellon i think they are desperate to rehome some horses. PM me if you like..x

Hopefully a silly question but do you have experience of keeping horses? And would a rescue horse have company? Rescue horses often have specific needs too, eg careful handling or diet or veterinary/farrier care. You've probably got tons of experience, but in case you haven't and just want to help a horse, it's not as easy as taking a rescue kitten. If you have no experience, one of the best ways to help is either to donate £££ to your favourite rescue organisation or find your local Horse and Pony Trust and volunteer some time for them. Good luck.

Totally agree with this one. I took on a mini shetland from someone who had been reported lots and lots of times, but to the RSPCA! He was kept with only sheep and chickens, was fed bags and bags of carrots and apples and chicken corn!! When I picked him up he had sweet itch, lice, very matted coat, laminitis in all 4 feet and was totally uncatchable.

So I need all of the above and alot of time and patience to turn him round. It is very rewarding when you see them improve, so if you can provide all of the above, definately worth doing. I wouldn't just go and buy one from the sales, but this one was though asking locally about a companion pony for my 2 horses and someone gave me their details.

I understand your concerns but yes i am experienced at keeping horses.
I have recently just completed my HNC horse management course at the local college and iv kept horses for over 15yrs. i completely understand what is involved in rescueing a horse, i just feel with all the horses that have been given up lately my money would be better spent looking after a horse in need.

I have recently got a rescue horse from the WHW and I live over 100 miles from the nearest centre. So I don't think they mind how far away you are as long as you can provide a good safe home for a horse. Good luck with it and I hope you find a nice new 'friend'!!

I live north of inverness. i would ideally like a horse i was going to be able to ride, im not planning on eventing but a nice safe hack (beach rides) and some simple schooling and maybe if the gee takes me a little jump.
i live on my own 100+acre farm, with stables, hay etc...unfortunately no arena as o yet:( and yes there are other horses here mares & geldings, young & old....
most centre i have spoken to say they like their horses to be within visiting distances.
