Hi all. I posted a couple of years ago about how much me and my partner wanted a dog, though at the time finances were stretched - I asked about costs here and recieved some excellent advice, thanks again for all that. We're now in a better place financially, and are going to start looking probably from August onwards! I'm excited and nervous, haha.

Our plan was to look at rescues first, and then if nothing panned out to possibly look at puppies. My question this time around is: which rescue centres could we be looking at? We live in north Northants, and our closest rescues are Wellidog (Wellingborough Dog Rescue), Wood Green, RSPCA Northants and so on. I think we're just in range to reasonably look at Dog's Trust Loughborough branch. I'm sure I've missed some... If anyone has any reccomendations or personal experience of these places, do let me know! Or, any other ideas that I've not thought of... we're not sure about breed-specific rescues as we're not focussed on a particular breed at the moment, if that makes sense.

Thanks in advance for any tips!

Unfortunately we don't really seem to have any. We both work from home, if that makes any difference!

@stormox Oh yes we are! Thank you - I'll add them to the list. Do you have any experience with them?
@satinbaze Thank you so much - I'll take a look!
NANNA up the A6 used to have volunteers walk the dogs to the local park on a couple of days a week, I walked a lurcher once when in UK, It's a great opportunity to 'try before you buy' as well.

Animals in need at Little Irchester I only visited once or twice but they seem OK except they used to get dogs from a rather dodgy rescue here in Ireland. Thats not the dogs fault though I know.
I think if you can, both could be worth a look.

I think Blue Cross Hertfordshire would be an hour ish away. We got our last dog from there 😊
I can't see you having a problem if you work from home but my advice with looking for a rescue is to stick with it, it tends to take longer than finding a puppy but it's well worth it, they make the best dogs.

Good luck and make sure you come back and update with photos!

@Bellaboo18 Ah interesting, thank you I will add it to the list! Yes I feel we have a fair set-up - we're both WFH, own home, garden, no children... but we will see I guess! I'm expecting it to take a while... I have waited years for this opportunity and another while longer won't really register, haha!

We enquired at Animals in Need a few years ago. They said we weren't suitable because our garden walls were 5 foot high, they only re-home to people whose garden walls are at least 6 feet high.

@TheOldTrout wow that is a shame (for the dog and for you!) I don't know if this is naive of me but I don't know why they don't assess if the dog is likely to be able to clear a 5ft fence along with the other aspects of assessment they would be doing...?

I had 6ft fences put in last year in prep for this as I've heard so many stories. I'm really hoping we've got everything down good for it

It was disappointing, glad you've got big fences in ready! We ended up adopting our lovely little Blue through @Clodagh here on the forum.
