We have an 18 month lurcher x lunatic that we rehomed in November from the Dogs Trust. He's a big, boisterous, strong lad but there's also anxious behaviour in the mix. We're working on consistency from us and focus from him, but of course training is an ongoing project. Anyway, we're going on holiday with him in September and I'm a bit concerned that the change of location might trigger some of the behaviours we've worked hard to resolve. Are there any calming remedies that might help just take the edge off for him for the first couple of days? I want it to be a positive experience for him! Somebody suggested rescue remedy for dogs, but I thought I would consult the great and good on the H&H forum!

Adaptil collars are very good. I used one when I first got my dog and there was a definite improvement. They aren’t cheap but last a while. My dog will be having one when we go on holiday next month. You can also get plug in diffusers, but I haven’t tried them. My dog panics on veterinary prescribed calmers/sedative so it’s the only option I had. I have used human Rescue Remedy on a dog. It works, but the effects don’t last long (was great for fireworks).

Ooh thanks meleeka! Our dog is quite anxious about bangs so it sounds like that might be a useful thing to have.

We use Pet Remedy. One sniff and the Lab is snoring. Works on horses/cats/dogs. Also have meds from Vet for car travel, fireworks etc but Pet Remedy works really quickly.

Does nothing for my Lab but the nutripaw calming treats seem to help (they have stopped her car sickness which was anxiety based rather than motion sickness). They take a while to take effect but you have time to start him on them before you go.

Thanks everyone, really useful feedback. It sounds like the response to pet remedy is very individual. I have ordered an adaptil collar. Fingers crossed that helps him.

Rescue Remrdy used to help me and my sons neurotic Welsh pony. It might be worth a try, especially if you already have some knocking about.
