rescuing/adopting a horse or pony

Hello all,
I am new to this, so please excuse any mistakes.
I am looking to adopt/rescue/give a home to a horse for myself and one to for my daughter, maybe a weenie for my grandaughter.
I have looked and approached all the usual well known ones, Whw, redwings, blue cross etc, but then last night came across this one

As it is not one I am familar with I wondered if anyone on here could advise me more? Obviously I want to do what is right by the horse and by us.

Any advice gratefully recieved. : )

With regards to the link, personally, I would stick with the well known, and charity registered rescue centres. There are plenty of people out there, who take on horses becuase they obviously love them, but when it comes to actually taking one of these on, I would stick with the centres like Redwings, Bluecross WHW etc.

I looked at going down this route, and got really far with Redwings. I phoned them up and got friendly with one of the ladies there, who informed me of a youngster that was nearly ready to be rehomed. Then one weekend, a group of friends were heading near there centre for some completely non-horsey, so I gave the centre a call and said I could pop in if they wanted. They agreed, and I tried the horse. I was even the "choosen one" but unfortunately, due to a relationship break down, I had to back out... I was gutted!

Keep perserving, and make yourself known!
 
Another option, especially if you're not intending to ride the horse(s), is to keep an eye on here for the various posts that come up along the lines of "My horse is broken and I can't ride it and I'm looking for someone else to look after it". That way at least you know who the previous owner was and what is wrong with it and how it has been treated so far. With your daughter and granddaughter involved you really don't want to be taking on unknown quantities - and horses that are on the way to the meat man are just that.
 
I really would recommend you stick with the well known and reputable charities. Whilst I am sure these smaller charities may mean well they have often just bought these horses from sales, or from abattoirs. They haven't spent the time assessing and rehabitating the likes of WHW have, and , particularly in the case of the abattoir horses, they are often there for a reason, either soundness or temperament related.
 
Ditto the advice about sticking with one of the better known registered charities.

Rearrange these words into a familiar phrase; a - with - bargepole - touch - it - don't

Go to the likes of Redwings, who are genuine charities, unlike this. Or if you do decide to pursue this line, ask about proof of their charitable status.
 
Echo the above - stick to the well known, reputable organisations. The Blue Cross often have ponies/horses up for adoption too and I'm not sure what you're looking for, for yourself but there are the retraining racehorse centres too.

If you wanted to go with a smaller charity - you can check if the organisation IS actually registered as a charity by going onto the Charities Commission website and performing a search.

There have been a few posts on here before about this particular organisation so it may also be worth doing a forum search to pick up what others have said before...

have no idea about the charity.

but... the one on the right side of the picture, is the spitting image of my friends horse.... so much so it could be his twin!

Gosh, I googled it and also a few others that had been mentioned to me via pm and I think maybe you could be right, shame as I like to give everyone a chance.
 
As well as the big charities there are quite a number of smaller registered charities who often have ponies/horses available to re-home and of course they will know a lot about them, their health and behavioural issues and can assess if you are capable.

Google in your own area and go and talk to them--most charities without a national network prefer to re-home in easy reach where they can easily visit to do homechecks.

Be concerned if a large re-homing fee is required and a monthly donation to said charity.
