Research Survey for Horse Owners

If you don't mind could you tell us who you are and what the survey information is for please? Sorry to be fussy but I don't mind helping a student/academic researcher but don't fancy giving free marketing advice to companies.

Hi booboos

Thanks so much for filling in the survey. I'm a student at Harper Adams University in my 2nd year of an Equine Science degree and the survey is to help with with part of my Professional Research Project.

Maitlin, many thanks for your post - I was originally going to ask for weights of feed as that would have given really accurate results but many people still use 'scoops' as their measurements so wanted to be able to appeal to everyone.

Many thanks again for filling in the survey everyone! Keep them coming!

;)

It is part of a research study being conducted and will help shape future management practices of horses and ponies across the UK.

How will it shape future management practices? Who is it for?

Also, looking at the survey, the forage question for instance - the answer is going to depend on the time of year but there isn't space to explain that?

Hi Bethie

Thanks for your post. It's looking into how people use rugs and manage their horses with regards to weight, and feed etc.

Thanks for your feedback re forage - I understand that it varies for a lot of people but I'm just after an average that your horse consumes the most across the year.

Thanks again to everyone contributing!!

:)

the thing is, how do you define good or average grazing?
and how do you define appropriate use of rugs?
there are so many variables that it makes it nearly impossible to draw sensible conclusions...

Thanks for the clarifiction! Done!

Well it's all down to opinion I suppose, (which makes this kind of thing so difficult to quantify) but I've classified it as either:

Lush Pasture
Average Pasture
Sparse Pasture

So I guess 'average' would be somewhere between 'lush' and 'sparse'.

This is only a preliminary study which will identify any problems in data or future clarifications needed of which I am hoping to do for my dissertation :)

It is hard to try and get an all over picture with such a diverse topic, however hopefully some good results should come out of it and I can focus more on detailed areas in future research! ;)
