need to reseed part of field used over winter now grass in rest of field has grown. soil is compacted near gateways and completley bare. plan to do it ourselves whats the best way is it enough to rake it over or does it need to be dug quite deeply before seeding and how long will it take to recover thanks

You can do it with a long rake but you will need to make sure you break the soil up quite deeply.

The difficulty here lies in the fact that it can take a couple of years for the roots to really matt together and form a good surface so if you are planning on using that gateway again this winter it might be an idea to investigate specialist mats that allow the grass to grow through with protection from hooves.

If its just a small area Id would do it myself, ask your agricultural merchant about tough species of grass and hope that we get some rain soon!
