Hi,

I wonder if any of you can offer any support on tried and tested suppliments. I have a 16.2hh tbxshire 12yrs old. Earlier this year he suffered with a very bad cold/flu which took the vets 6 weeks to cure (it was so bad initially we thought it was strangles), however a long story short, all tests were negative for strangles and his condition eventually cleared up with penicilin (Norodine granuals did not work).

Since then he has occasionally suffered with a cough (i believe the condition has damaged his respiratory system, as he had it so long) - usually when he gets a little excited (feed time) and within the first trot when we ride (in the school but not usually on a hack). He is in a well ventilated stable/fed hayledge and on chippings. However I would also like to feed him a respiratory suppliment to try and help him, it is very occasional maybe 1 or 2 times a day and he mostly only suffers this time of year, once spring comes he is good again.

He is fed, chop or alfalfa, calm and condition, topline cubes, sugarbeet, carrots and garlic daily.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a suppliment/advice which would be beneficial to him? Preferably tried and tested ones.

Thank you for your help. xx

Is there a relationship between being out 24/7 in summer and being stabled?........ if so I would try to get him in to a big stable with a good "draught" running through it, or adapt the ventilation., obviously you need to keep him rugged up at all times even when grooming [blanket over the quarters, to prevent chilled muscles.
My first hunter had this problem[ 1970's], and we gave him Codeine Syrup [vet] during the coughing and then followed up with Harveys Aconite Powders [not available now due to EC regs and toxicity I suppose] which I sourced from the saddler [those were the days]. You could try aconite from the homeopathic remedies, but if it is anything like humans homeopathy you need a "clean palate" so have to find some way of popping on to the gums straight from the container.
I had to soak all hay, and put a few handfuls of molasses meal in his food http://www.molatek.co.za/Products/EnergyFeeds/MolassesMeal/tabid/979/language/en-GB/Default.aspx
This would not be good for a spooky type but my hunter was pretty cold blooded

I know homeopathy has been scientifically disproved, but I once had a chronic problem myself which defeated the NHS and went to a private [qualified] doctor and the results were SPECTACULAR, and since I had not been forewarned, there was no way I could have predicted what was about to happen.

I had good results with Naf Respirator last year after one of mine caught a virus, he was treated with antibiotics and ventolin from the vet first but he still wasn't quite right so I put him on it to see if it would help him. Only took one tub and he was back to normal. I also had him treated by my osteopath as I know from personal experience bones being out can effect the lungs ability to work properly.

Just a quick update if you are interested...

I'm currently trying the Global herbs Dust Liquid and touch wood it seems to be working, I've not heard him cough, I will be riding him this evening so we'll see if his usual cough if first trot happens or not.

But so far so good.

Thank you all for your comments.

Sarah xx
