hi,
i have a mare who was running with a stallion last summer, no-one saw any 'action' so to speak and they seemed to not be very interested in each other so it was assumed that she wouldnt be infoal. well, seems she is!
She was out with him from 21st July until approx end of september (? not sure exactly when stallion went).
yesterday evening she seemed very restless. was constantly walking around the field, tail swishing etc. i kept on popping back to the yard to check on her and this continued. she didnt seemed distressed or anything, i did see her get down and back up twice a few times when i was stood watching her.
shes not bagging up etc yet but i am concerned, according to one of the foaling tables i have in one of my books, it says that if she was covered as soon as she was turned out with the stallion, then she is due to foal 24th june, so i guess its still very early?? or is it??

i know this is the hugeeeee disadvantage of mares running with stallions, especially those that appear to be nocturnal!

how early have you all experienced mares foaling? could she just be very uncomfortable/foal was moving position? should i seperate her from her field friends now? (i wouldnt want her foaling with the geldings there!)

Have you had her scanned/blood tested to see if she is acctually in foal?

My girl stayed out with her field companion til the night she foaled, it was easier that way for us.

Hi,
my mare has had 2 foals and it is rare that she will foal early.
They often feel restless and fed up this time in their pregnancy and if there is no sign of her bagging up then she won't be ready yet.
The foal will be quite big now so if you think she is carrying it 24/7 it must be hell.
Probably seperate her at the end of this month that will be fine as its best to keep their rotine as normal as possible.
Hope this helps and good luck.

Thanks. i must admit i was stood stroking her last night and felt a bit sorry for her as i remember the last few months of my pregnancy (mind you, i had two in there!)
the vet came the other week to swab one of my other mares and he didnt see the point of a scan/blood test. (suprised me a bit as i expected them to want the £££!) shes a madien mare so we have nothing to go off with what shes like prior to foaling.

She could have 2 in there also.

it did cross my mind also hence why i wanted the vet to look at her. he is one of the practices vets who specialise in the breeding side of things so i trust him etc. i guess i could hae pushed for him to scan her but he didnt think it was needed. she isnt massive, a friend who has a stud looked at her at the end of january and said she couldnt tell if she looked in foal or not.
