I need to track a small area of field that unfortunately has far too much grass for my girl. She's got a nice bare(ish) area at the moment but it's on the best winter section so I don't want to trash it any more.

The farmer has cut the grass in the other part of the field and I was going to strim it and put a few stable mats down to make a grass free patch. I was then thinking of making a track with grass mats, I figured there would be a small amount of grass coming through but she wouldn't be able to pig out completely. I'd also not be completely killing all the grass underneath. (Not sure how the farmer would feel about me completely removing all the grass!) I plan on moving the stable mats once they've killed off a bit so there are patches of minimal grass.

Is this likely to work? Will grass mats act as a sort of ground level muzzle like I'm thinking? (I don't want to actually use a muzzle on her, she's got really sensitive skin on her face and if she managed to get it off during the day then she'd be stuffing herself silly. Plus I have tried in the past and she hates them).
