When I was first talking to him he was talking about the plate being the most likely cause and take it out...... But xray first

Came back and he looked at xrays and said 'oh dear. This is not what I was expecting. Bones have healed great' 'HOWEVER you have the worst case of arthritis I have EVER seen' 'I can't believe how fast this has happened, there was no sign of it 5 or 6 months ago' I will have to refer you to the foot and ankle specialist as I don't know enough about arthritis to know what is best for you. But ultimately they can fuse the joint My chiro told me to avoid this at almost all costs as I would have no movement in my ankle. Can't SJ like that can you????

I have appt with my Rheumatoid Arthritis specialist on the 25th so will discuss it with him first

It is so not what I was expecting, not so bad so fast!!

I did finally get copies of my xrays so will post them later for anyone interested in the original fracture

I would get a second opinion and just because you have arthritis, doesn't mean you can't ride! I've got it in my back, hips and hands and a good dose of glucosamine does wonders. OK, I can't do the things I used to do but it may just mean using those bendy stirrups to ease your foot and ankle.

I find exercises my physio also helps keep me mobile so I'm sure your doc would be able to refer you to a physiotherapist for exercises you can do being doing a last resort bone fuse!

Could you try Glucosamine tablets etc (from Holland & Barrett etc)

OH nearly lost his leg in an accident over 10 years ago and has arthritis in his ankle joint and finds acupuncture, a TENS machine and glucosamine all help towards minimising the pain.

However, horrid news to have, chin up and hopefully you can find a solution that keeps you riding.

Try shark cartilage - OH has it for his knee, it's unbelievable stuff. Bit pricey but my goodness it worked for him and you don't need much a week once you've loaded your system.

Where do you get shark cartilage from? A shop like Holland & Barret? Boots? I'll try anything

I use flexijoint from revitalife - Equimins human version!
Shark cartilage + glucosamine + MSM + chondroitin
Not cheap, but I am 99% sure it's the only reason I'm still riding.

I also have rheumatoid arthritis so it just adds to my very long list of problems

Tell me about it. That's why I mostly ride side saddle now and strap myself into a corset just to be able to do stuff.

I feel your pain!! But just don't let the doc do anything drastic on you, ok?

Since its Rheumatoid arthritis, its an autoimmune problem. And though MSM etc will help in most cases of 'ordinary'arthritis, I would ask your consultant whether it is wise to go down that route. If you are into alternative treatments, have you thought of going to a doctor trained in Traditinal Chinese medicine - sometimes they are trained in both Western and Chinese medicine. It might be worth a try.

Really sorry to hear about your ankle! Try not to be too downhearted, wait till you speak with the specialist, I am sure he/she will be able to offer you a lot of options.

Personally I would not take anything without discussing it with my doctor and certainly not something that neither claims to help with such problems nor has any proof that it does. Arthritis is a spontaneously recovering and recurring conditions and improvements are usually down to this rather than dubious 'medications'.

Don't give up on the riding, there is an awfull lot of old crocks on this forum don't you know and the horses and riding keep us sane? most of the time and flexible. I have to limbo under the electric fence to muck out my 4 stables. But Willow does it better, I've got a feeling she's been watching me.

Oh I won't.... I can't I will be in a wooden box before I give up riding.............. altho I may need to get help doing the chores

My specialist told me I would never ride again and would always walk with a limp. Don't believe them, I can walk fine, ride ok inc jumping and even manage a steady jog. Stay positive

So sorry to hear your news I have a freind who has had the fusion op PM me if you like for more info....I'm sure she'll be glad to put your mind at ease. Oh and BTW she rides very well!!

Sorry to hear that. Couple of different break tories that might help? My sister fractured her ankle doing wii fit can you believe

Anyway her ankle was still sore and swollen a few months after the event and she was told it was arthiritis. She went for 2nd opinion and was told it was a small piece of floating bone causing the problem. She needed a small op but all ok 4 months on

I've broken my left ankle twice and the second time, 6 years ago, it took about 15 months before the swelling completely went and even longer before the aching stopped particularly, in cold weather. Don't have any problems with it now I'm pleased to say just took alonger than I would have liked to heal.

Good luck, let us know how you get on

If the worst comes to the worst, my friend is booked for an ankle joint replacement, so you will be able to ride in future.

Best of luck.
