Hi, I was wondering if I could ask some advice if anyone on here is in the equine retail area?

I am thinking of having a stand at the horse shows that we go to, just to earn some extra to help pay towards ‘forever eating’ horses. I would like to stock grooming supplies that would then appeal to the people showing. Just before I contact the manufactures that sell various products, I just wondered what mark-up grooming supplies generally had? If anyone know I would appreciate it

Thank you

When I worked in a shop that sold horse stuff amoung other things, the mark up was 50% across all the stock. Then the owner of the shop changed and it all ranged between 50% and 60%. This was a couple of years ago, so it may have changed since I left.

Most retailers go on the 'Double it and add VAT' principal, but I doubt you will be able to charge that much at a Show where its usually a lot more competitive. Its worth having a walk around the show to see what everyone else is charging before you make a decision!

I managed a tack shop and also worked in others and mark up was generally between 65-85% + VAT - but then the mark up is higher in shops because of the overheads....

Just a note to you regarding the distributors / manufacturers, alot of them will not sell to you unless you have a shop premises....and some set an RRP that you have to stick to...
