If a horse has retained a testicle is it a rig? Should the retained one be removed at the same time as the dropped one? Would this be under anaesthetic? What / how long would be the aftercare & recuperation? What might this cost? Never met this situation before so am looking for other people's experiences & questions to ask vet. Thank you

A retained testicle doesn't make a horse a rig. If the horse has the descended testicle removed but not the retained one, then it is a rig. This time of year is a good time to have the procedure done but it is a bit more involved than a standard gelding. Recuperation and aftercare really depends on what the vet finds when he opens the horse; if it is just inside the opening in the groin the surgery will be minimally invasive but it may be much further in or even attached to the inside of the abdominal wall.

My last colt had one drop and the other retained. He went in to hospital and put under with no problems. Came home a day later. Healed very well , I kept him out as it was very dry. Cost about £400 in total.
