Does anyone know of any reputable ones?
My friend has a horse, been to leahurst and they cant find out what is wrong with him, hes lame but they just have found nothing. He is due to go back on the 8th Of July. But friend does not think he will come sound so is looking at retiring him.
He isnt dog lame by the way its just slightly doesnt affect his way of live just cant be worked.

I think more pressure has been put on her though as both her 2 kids want a pony each, and come to the decision of doing this.
I have no idea where you can send them though? Can anyone help?
 
My horse has been retired, he has bone spavin, high and low ring bone, side bone and pedal osteitis in all 4s. I have had him for 6 years, but there is no way I could send him elsewhere. It means that I do not have a horse to ride, but I still have him and know he will always be in safe hands. He has given me 6 years of his life, the least I can do is look after him now.

I have heard of the bransby home for retired horses, there is the ILPH or WHW, redwings, blue cross or maybe even a small local place near you.

I wouldnt write the horse of yet though.

I am sure I am going to get shot down in flames for this post, but I feel its the right thing to do for me personally.

I hope the horse comes sound. It seems your friend is thinking more of what the children want rather than what is best for her and her horse.

I am not critising, its not my situation, I am speaking from a different perspective thats all.
 
No I totally agree with you, I got frustrated about the whole thing, I hope he comes sound aswell I really do. I just didnt fancy starting a whole debate about the thing. To be honest the kids are being selfish they have a pony they share. But arent happy and want to sell that one but then both get one each. Obv as one isnt big enough for a 14.2 and the other doesnt want the 13.2 if the other gets one.

I am speaking to friend about all this today as I know she has been thinking about keeping the kids happy but she was really looking forward to having her horse come back into work if he came sound.
 
I can totally see where you are coming from. Its not my situation, but I would feel sickened if my children wanted me to get rid of my horse so they could have a new one. I def would not give in. Horses are not like toys which you can discard once you have finished having the enjoyment out of them.

I really hope the horse comes sound. They can do some amazing things in equine vet medicine these days.

I too, totally understand where you are coming from, when my first horse had to be retired in January I vowed he wouldnt leave me. He learnt me to ride and was the best horse ever - never actually fell off him either!!!

Hes a retired ex racehorse with kissing spine, navicular, ringbone, djd in hocks and sacrioliac subluxation. I have had to sacrifice and buy a cob as a second horse as i dont think i could afford 2 softies (well the vets bills!!!!).
 
I hope he comes round to, it is amazing what vets can do these days and even if he's just ends up unlevel but in no pain he'd still make a happy hacker

The ILPH will take retired horse's if you can justify why they can't be sold (i.e. they are lame and may be sold on to dealers) and they are not at the stage where they should be PTS (my friend had this issue, tried to get them to take a horse with hip issue and the officer said they won't take him as he should be put down due to the amount), the only problem I would have with the ILPH is the screening of potential lone home's is never as good as you'd do yourself. Do you not have any horsey friends that may want a companion?
