I don't know whether the mare and foal sanctuary offer this kind of service but they may have some contacts if not. Google them, they are in Newton abbot.

I was reading about one today in March issue of Equi Ads.....can't remember what it was called but they had a 52 yr old mare called Lily!! It wasn't just for horses though, it was for all types of animals.......not much help! If I remember I'll have a look when I get home!

I'm half heartedly looking for a companion. I'm not fussy, my criteria are:

Something that is a reasonable doer, as my mare is and I don't want to have to separate them if the companion needs more grass and she doesnt! The paddock is just over 3 acres and there would only be 2 of them out there, so i'm not talking a bare mud paddock, but something prone to fatness and lami would be fine.

Happy to stay alone 3 or 4 times a week while I take my mare out hacking.

Ok being turned out over the winter in 13 acres with a yearling, 2 year old and the aforementioned mare. Its very sheltered (generally warmer there than in my house :D ) But I cant have anything too infirm as the youngsters do play boisterous games and need putting in their place occasionally.

Not too big as I'm allergic to anything over about 15.2hh, but I'd be swayed by a nice character and something that fits the bill in every over way.

I'm not keen on big medical issues, and being very superficial I'd like something thats got a nice face and is friendly.

In an ideal world I'd like something up to the very odd bit of light hacking, ie max an hour at walk with the odd trot.

I cant find one for love or money! If your horse meets that bill I'd snap your hands off if you were closer and I cant be the only one!

Yes !! a friend of mine runs one - funnily enough someone I work with was saying her big ex-show coloured is retired and I asked where and is at the same place - and she is VERY pleased with the keep there.

is at Winkleigh

My gelding is here too, its lovely - huge fields, loads of grass and really well looked after. I live in Surrey so I don't get to visit often but he's more than happy without me around!

hi dexter
where are you?my horse is only 12 and 15.3hh. he can be lightly ridden by experienced rider. he'd be fine with the mare and the colt but wouldnt be too happy being left in the field on his own but would stay in a stable by himself.
To those who have their horse in retirement livery in winkleigh ive been in contact their saying £33 per week that seems an awful lot for grass keep?

I don't think so.

It isn't merely Grass Keep though is it? It is the whole package, the whole point of retirement livery is that the owner can be 'absent' for as much or as little as they like, but can be reassured that their horse is being cared for on a daily basis, not just thrown out in some mud patch with a round bale put in every few days.

Horses will be checked over daily, blankets changed as appropriate, fed, bought in and held for Farrier and Vet, any wounds/ailments/special requirements attended to, blah, blah, blah...For 33 quid I think that is a pretty good deal to be honest.

Hi all,
There is a place few miles from us here in north Devon that does retirement livery called Barricane stables. New owners recently and have only heard good things. Hope this helps somebody
