I offer retirement livery in Devon on our yard at home, I have 7 stables in total so it is a lovely quiet peaceful yard. I have some horses staying with us on part & full livery then I have offer a couple of spaces for Retirement livery so that I can give them my own personal attention. We have brand new light spacious stables with a super arena that has a semi professional surface (the old guys love to have a dust bath in it!!!) we have post and rail paddocks for safety and my husband is a Vet so they get 24/7 peace of mind should they need him! I check them every night before I go to bed incase their nets & water need a top up or if they need additional rugs on. If they are on full retirement livery with a stable & Veteran Menu's!! then it is £100 per month or if they are on grass retirement ie out 24/7 then it is £40 per week. I have their feet trimmed by a superb farrier and their backs etc checked six monthly. Owners that live out of my area receive a monthly up date letter with a current photo, I DONT insist you make an appointment to come and visit your horse it is ok to just turn up (unlike some yards that expect you to make an appointment so that they can muck out and groom properly before you arrive).

£100 a week????!!!????
£40 a week for grass livery.
That's why people have their oldies pts. I'm not being judgmental, just realistic.
Thank heavens my boy can be rehomed for light hacking - but when he can't be ridden anymore, if no-one wants or needs him as a companion then that's it, because there just isn't a financially viable alternative unfortunately.
i think 40 a week is very reasonable , its easy to find a grass keep situation where you can bung horse and forget him but not easy to finds a yard thats prepared to look after old mr creaky properly , my old boy gets checked twice a day , rugs changed feet picked , hes a whippet cross so is fed daily in summer despite excellent grazing, is rugged , needs veteran feed , suppliments etc , i do all this myself at the moment , but if i was looking for a retirement livery i,d be preparared to pay the proper rate for it
I have a horse on retirement livery at maple farm. http://www.maplefarmliveries.co.uk/index.php
he is the palomino in the background of the features page & on the contact us page.
He is on grass livery which is £35 per week plus extras (hay & feed in the winter) or if in for a day, farrier etc.
Prices are on the website.
The care of the horses is fantastic.
I currently pay £110 a month for my pony. She lives out but has access to stables at night - there are four of them and four stables so the field gate is just left open at night for them to choose. I pay for any hay, feed, shoeing on top of that. Although this is expensive it's not a proper retirement home, more a private yard. I couldn't bare her to be too far away and she is checked on twice a day and regularly groomed. Hopefully she'll go live with mum and dad soon when they retire and get land!
My old boy is out on retirment livery with YO's oldies, she's done me a very nice deal that enabled me to have my new lad as well.
£35 per week summer and £45 per week winter when they get ad-lib haylege to.
Lots of different fields for them so they don't get trashed either.
I pay for worming and trimms on top of that.
Seems a very good deal to me.
When you come right down to the crunch for the amount of hours she puts in a week on him it's very little money , yet alone when the pony nuts etc are added in.
They're checked twice daily and rugged in winter.

My mare has been at Monshall Farm for 3 years and is extremely happy and well cared for!!
She lives out 24/7 with the rest of the herd. There are only retired horses there, so the horses are not unsettled with horses constantly being taken in and out of the group which could happen on a normal livery yard. My mare is a tough New Forest who had to be retired early due to injury, however I didn't want her to be stabled at all as she is most happy when she is out. The difficulty I had was finding a retirement livery where she could live out all year round.
I'm so glad I found Monshall and am confident she will live out her days happily and peacefully.
I pay approx £25 week which includes everything other than vet/vaccinations.
We have a pony at a yard in wales - I looked for ages to find one appropriate for her as she had laminitis so the ones that just turn them all out 24/7 all year round are no good, they need to be in smaller herds on managed grazing and prepared to look after them properley. It is £42 a week for her and in winter she comes in every night, that includes everything except worming and vets. I have to say I woldn't pay £100 a week for retirment livery, that is just the same as full livery on a local yard!
Star is at the Happy Horse Retirement Home in Brecon - really nice people, fantastic set up.

Offering a retirement livery is an option that many people would prefer to take. Many people find it difficult to part with a much loved pet and would prefer the peace of mind of knowing he is being cared for.
When you putting a cost on your time and travelling, I think it is good value for money.
my horse is on retirement livery in oxfordshire. he lives out 24/7 with various horses - over the winter he lived with the broodmares but now they're being put in foal he's out with a yearling and another couple of oldies. i pay £120 a month in summer, £150 in winter. that includes any hay and hard feed, twice daily checks, poo-picking, rug changes (if he needed them), bringing him in for farrier or vet. worming and foot trimming and obviously vet bills are extra.
Hello, I'm new to the forum but hoping someone can help.
Can anyone recommend me a retirement livery - grass only for my 27 year old mare? She's currently at a yard in Essex so close to there or Surrey, Kent, SW London ish to be closer to me.
Would also be happy to consider a companion situation.
