How much would you expect to pay a month? We have a 30 year old mare with us at the moment, she is checked twice a day, rugged as and when necessary, has farrier and dentist regularly, wormed, field is poo picked, stabled with a straw bed when the weather is nasty and ad-lib hay all winter. Fed pony nuts and carrots twice a day too. Owner pays farrier and dentist on top of livery fee but everything else is included. Owner rarely visits, usually pays three monthly (with hints).

200 a month for that.
I look after the horse as if it is one of my own, owner has no worries and comes up for 20 minutes on the odd Sunday afternoon.

I had a quote recently from a specialist retirement livery yard down South - I was quoted £145 per month for life for the same as you are offering and to be honest, I thought that was good. I would have been happy paying up to £180 per month. As it was, I ended up keeping him with me.

To be honest, both me and her owner thought she was on the way out about five years ago which is why she came to me, but, she looks better after this summer than she has for years, apart from arthritis in one knee and she stays out all winter with access to a field shelter unless the weather is terrible or icy like last year. The only time I have a problem is when she is brought in to the stable as she lies down and struggles to get up. I check her both morning and night to make sure she's not too hot/cold and hearing her whinney every morning when she hears us up and about is lovely. Not looking forward to the inevitable but she's had a great few years with us and her field companions. Think I'm going to have to have a little word with the owner to up the livery charge, especially as everything costs more this year.

£30 a month is mad! I pay £45 a week for my mare to be on retirement livery. she has lots of grass and is reguarly checked on and I think this is about the standard rate, so you should charge at least £30 per week, but up to about £70 per week considering she is stabled and you have to muck out etc too!!
