I'm looking for livery for my 17yr TB gelding who has recently been retired. He lives out all the time although access to a field shelter/stables would be useful.
I am out of the Country a lot with my job so the livery needs to be quite flexible. He is very low maintenance in the summer but would require some rug checking, feeding and haying in the winter months. Ideally I would like somewhere with a lot of grazing and with company as he's a sociable old thing. I live near Odiham in Hampshire so would like somewhere within reasonable range of this location; however, I won't discount any location if it can offer the right service. Most importantly is that it is reasonably priced.

Thank you!

If you don't mind distance I'd recommend Monshall Retirement Livery in Devon. They all live out in huge fields, haylage in winter, checked at least twice a day. Grouped in small herds of suitable companions. Horses are really happy. My boy has gone down for recup. livery but I am going to feel very guilty taking him away as he loves it! Has website and loads of piccies on Facebook under equine retirement livery if you look. Cost around £150pcm all inclusive.

Another vote for Monshall Horse Retirement livery!

Natalie is great!

And you can make a mini holiday by staying down there in the holiday home!!!

Good luck

And another vote for Monshall! They've got my old boy (a very riggy chap) and a young mare of mine, retired through injury, who is laminitis prone, has ems, dodgy back and still hates being out of work. I thought I'd have to have her pts, because she was so unwilling to retire, but she adores it at Nat's. They've both got fields and company that suits them, they look fantastic, and are utterly chilled. Nat puts up photos on a FB page, sends updates, and is happy for you to visit regularly or not, as you choose.

Can I just say a big thank you to the original poster and all the replies on this post, as a direct result of what I read my 26 year old pony is moving to Monshall on Monday, let me know the names of your horses and I'll look out for them when I get there!

hello everyone. I've terrible at replying on the forum so I apologise. Thank you for all your responses. Still haven't made a decision about my old boy. Have thought about it seriously but not sure I want to send him where I won't see him very often. Hmmmm. I will be moving in the spring so I will have a rethink then when i know where I'm moving to. Trafford - hope your horse has settled at Monshall.

I always was wary of these kind of places etc ie will they go and sell horse on etc and recently friend viewed a horse for sale linked to a retirement livery and they couldnt believe what a wonderful facility it was. Most were out in the herd(au naturelle) and obviously the owner would sort out PTS etc when needed. They said they were really cared for and in fact came away thinking of setting up something similar. But unfortunately it was in Befordshire and was registered establishment etc, so not much good for you etc. Cant remember its name but the prices were on the website etc(I dont think it was expensive etc) Good luck. Or can you companion your horse but still pay bills etc and ask a friend or family member to call in on your horse as part of an agreement when they want whilst you are away(get references etc of the person taking as companion etc)

150 pounds per month all inclusive is actually pretty good value. At the moment I pay 130 pounds for grass livery and stable plus 80 pounds for someone to look after him whilst I'm away. I also cover all extras such as feed, worming, trimming etc. So actually 150 pounds is alot cheaper! I think in my mind my predicament is this: If he's going to be miles away so I can never really see him again then I want this would have to be super cheap livery, say 100 pounds/ month. If he's closer so I can still see him then I would be happy to pay a bit more. At the end of the day I have to be a little practical about this as he has now become like a very big, useless, expensive dog! Before anyone gives me a hard time I say this mostly in jest. However, the money pit isn't bottomless so the old boy can have his retirement but I would prefer it to be as cheap as possible. Surely there must be a family in Hampshire who own some land and would like to have a friendly horsey to feed mints to each day?!

Emma have you found anywhere yet? I'm also looking for somewhere for my big 17hh Warmblood who has never lived out! He has arthritis and is no liner happy being ridden and its crippling me on part livery! My parents live in Odiham so please let me know if you find somewhere x

My horse has been at Goodmerry Farm in Cornwall for about 8 years. It's £195 a month in summer, bit more in winter, but that includes everything except farrier, worming, vet, dentist. It's good value for a poor doer TB like her. She lives out in summer and comes in at night in the winter and is in a huge field with two other horses. The lady who runs the yard is lovely and gives me regular updates.
