Okay...

IF a horse was retired (At the grand old age of 6)!, to a retirement home....does her passport stay with her?

How often do you normally visit without looking like the psycho owner from hell?

Found a beautiful retirement home im considering (see previous thread), 60 acres of land they "chillax" in.... she can get totally minging and not wear a rug! :D .....no more clipping, riding etc.

I was looking at grass livery, but concluded that I would only be going to up check she had 4 legs and no cuts I may as well (for the same price), have someone else check her twice a day and she will be in a regular "friendship" group...am i right to think that??? or do i keep her closer to home?


Not a decision im rushing as its a very hard one...as Ive had her a few years and never had a day off :o i love being round my horse (no-one elses tbh lol!), so very hard to think i wouldnt see her except mabey once a month due to travel......

thoughts/experiences welcome.
 
Hi noodle, I think you should be able to go as often as you like.If the yard is close once a week maybe with a bag of apples and a trip at the weekend maybe to give a brush and a cuddle.However if you work alot and you live further away monthly would be ok with a catch up via text or facebook etc.No one though on any yard should make you feel a physcho owner even if you want to visit everyday shes your horse and you should be able to visit when ever you like.Its a tough choice , but who knows shes 6 and a yr of "retirement" may help her health etc and be what she needs.If your moving her away from home check the vets local to the new yard and make sure they are on the top of things regarding her ulcers etc. best of luck xx

if im honest id rather she was closer to home with me, but theres nothing here that i can put her on and feel happy as i can only get there once a day. Id rather pay someone to look after her than rely on people.

Its about 45 mins one way which isnt a lot, i could easily go once a week, but in some ways id like to wean myself to once every other week then once a month perhaps?

I know i can brin gher home anytime iwant but i know a year of just munching will do her a load of good :)
 
your right nothing has to be set in stone , if you give retirement a go and it does,nt suit you or her, you can always bring her back closer to you....best wishes what ever you deciede x

i keep thinking though i want to see her daily :o

im constantly blowing hot and cold about the whole thing.....


i know a year off riding will stop her issues and mabey just more "out" time will help.

If she's well cared for you'll probably find you can let go a little and not want to visit daily. If you end up missing her you can always move her back closer.
 
Mine is on retirement livery and his passport is with him.

I think she'll be better off at retirement livery than local grass livery. At grass livery there'll be people going backwards and forwards, horses coming in and out, people feeding outside the field etc. I think being in a settled herd of non-ridden horses is much better.

i agree about the settlement of a herd which is why i do favour retirement :).

ive no issue in getting her a companion if i were to keep her locally (which i want to do anyhow as her ridden replacement :o - i cannot bear to part with this horse - as long as shes happy in the field and never in pain i know i will go against everything i believe in and keep her as a pet.... :o )


lots to think about.... she is ok on livery (but if i wasnt riding i would want more "out" time) and as long as i dont ride her she wont get colic...


too much to decide. :/
