Due to a broken leg (his fault), My poor horse has been chucked out in his field 24/7 for a little holiday while i recover. He's a big wamblood chap and has never spent the night outside since i have owned him.
He has plenty of grazing and space, and seems to be doing fine. My dilema however is this:

The lightweight rug that I have (some cheap saxon thing) is nylon lined and he seems to sweat up in it quite easily. He's had nothing on over night for the past few days as its been quite mild at night, but should the weather drop a little I want to know he's warm enough - But not at the risk of him getting sweaty.
Am I a complete idiot & should I just leave him rugless regardless and let him crack on?

Also, Ive found a lightweight rug, with a polycotten MESH lining (Masta duelux lightweight) - Am i right in thinking this sort of rug would be more suitable if he were to get a little...sweaty?
If So, Do any of you know how Masta sizes come up? Most of his rugs are weatherBeta, and they seem to come up quite large?

...Would appreciate any advice.

poor you, I hope the leg heals fast.

I would not rug up in this weather if he is fit, young enough and not a complete wimp. Domi has one of those mesh lining rugs and he is still sweating up in it at the moment so he is out naked... masta sizes come up true to measurements I find, they fit my deep chested chap very well.

Unless it showers are whatever I'd be inclined to leave naked. It's not cold & if he is fit, young & well cared for there's no reason why he should be using up bodyfat etc to keep himself warm as it is hardly bad weather.

I think he'd be fine?

Ditto! or you could use one of the horsewear fly sheets with the waterproof underlayer thingy? Should be totaly breathable - expensive though!!

Just for future reference - Do those mesh lined lightweights make any difference at all? I was going to invest in one but perhaps I wont bother?

Hi,
Any waterproof rug wont stop them sweating up if they really get hot but the more expensive rugs are as breathable as they can be. Fal are always good as are horseware. I tend to stick to both of these brands, personal choice i guess but i have always found them very good to use, a good fit and hardwearing which is a bonus when they cost a fair bit! A mesh lining is going to be better than a cheaer rug with a basic nylon lining. I also agree that he should cope fine naked at night. My lot are out at night at the mo and the only one i pop a rug on is 24 and that is only if we have a cold night or a lot of rain.

He doesnt need a rug. He is a horse and quite well designed to cope with a few summer showers even when its dark and the temperature falls away.

Please try not to worry! As long as he has food and a hedge or something to get next to he will survive perfectly well.

Absolutely agree with Spaniel, he won't need a rug unless he is ill.

btw, Masta rugs come up a good size.

I personally would rug up, as I wouldnt be able to sleep at night, imagine if there was a down pour and hes outside all wet!! (thats why my horsey stays in!)

My Masta stable rig I bought was enormous on my mare so the defo come up big!
