If this can be done safely & with a degree of certainty it would work I can see the technique being used on horses like Shutterfly & other quality horses who perform at the highest levels but were gelded at an early age.
............................ Just think of the market for horses sired by Shutterfly ?
i just hope it doesnt lead to even more indiscriminate breeding.
could be good could be bad.. but i think if a horse has been gelded in the first place its usually for a reason ie poor conformation etc and wasnt really stallion material. but of course theres always some horses that would make stallion material that have been gelded.
Urm, I think people are getting confused between gelding and getting a vasectomy. Gelding the testicles are completely removed, gone, vamoosh... you can't reverse that. A vasectomy is where the tubes are cut or tied so all the 'bits' are still there, just not functioning. I would think that this isn't really done on your everyday horse because its high risk and extremely expensive and if you want to keep it a stallion then you do. When you're talking about endangered species then keeping good genes within the gene-pool can surely only be a good thing. Here's hoping he has some new babies next year
Trouble is AFAIK if you do a vasectomy all you are doing is preventing the sperm from being released so instead of a "manageable" gelding with little or no interest in mares you will still have a stallion's nature and urges, but firing blanks.
