I have never found any 0g rugs to be anything more than shower proof. I think they need a layer of something to help keep the rug waterproof, even if its just 100g. The only lightweight turnout Ive found waterproof is my old Weatherbeeta Tristar outer shell. Otherwise, I bought a brand new no fill Mark Tood one the other day and it leaks like a sieve. Had same problem with Amigo and Masta.

yep i agree. i never trust no fills in very heavy showers. horseware do a 100g rug and i find them brilliant.

Rambo all the way for me. They last years, gave detachable hoods and can add liners.
I've never had an issue with leaks - horses always warm and dry underneath. Even when just using the outer (no fill). My mare is currently out, in the rain, with her no fill on - she has a full clip, and is warm and dry underneath.
The no fill Rambo does have a lining material, so it is two layers but no padding - if that makes sense. Maybe why it's always felt dry?

I think you've answered your own statement there :p I've had Masta, Mark Todd and Amigos that all leaked like a sieve from day one. Got some shires that are going great guns at the moment and have never leaked even after torrential downpours. I've not had a problem with the fit of the Shires but my lot are fairly generic size/ shape wise.

PS the liners that clip on at the back and are velcro'd at the front (such as Premier Equines) have gone under any rug for me without slipping even though they haven't had the attachments at the shoulder.

I got a cheap Gallop rug. Totally waterproof and a great fit. Can't believe such cheap rugs are so good.

I also buy gallop rugs. I don't ever spent a lot on rugs tbh.... The electric fence stopped working at one point and he managed to get onto the fence behind it (barbed wire) and tore it very slightly at the front. Other than that his gallop rainsheet is great, had it a year and it's nice and waterproof. I've just bought their 100g rug too as it fits him so nice. He's got a big chest and shoulders and some of the other rugs I've bought have just been too tight. The gallops fit him great.

We have Gallop rugs, too!

I bought the Draft horse a no fill turnout with neck and the cob a standard neck turnout at the beginning of the summer, they both fit well although I did go up a size to accommodate massive shoulders. The cob does look rather like a deckchair in her stripes but she doesn't seem to care:D. The Draft horse hates to get her neck wet, so she is extremely happy and as her rug is plain blue, she looks quite smart.
We have other Gallop rugs and despite being cheap enough to replace every year, they have lasted well - far better than the Requisite rug that leaked all over the Draft mare after one short season.:D

We have had some heavy rain already this season and all four horses have stayed dry.

never had a 1200D weatherbeeta, axiom or amigo (my amigos are all 10-12 yo) and mine live out in Scotland with angry sideyways rain :) did have a Swish leak though and various 600D rugs which is why I wont buy them. I think some of the problem with no fills can be condensation but only use them to keep horses clean for riding and can't bring myself to put 50g + rugs on natives in the summer (or any other time tbh). I've not had the condensation problem in better rugs but have in the cheaper versions (i.e. weatherbeeta genero)

I have HiZone rugs that I came across at Your Horse Live. I think they are a small company so they don't have a large advertising budget, but they come under the "good value" bracket. I still have the original no fill rain sheet which must be 6 or 7 years old and I can't believe how waterproof it is. The horse has been out all day in non-stop rain and he is still dry underneath. It takes a couple of days to dry out though, so I have 2 of those. They have detachable neck covers which is useful.

They fit my horse very well, but horses come in all shapes and sizes.

I have a PE which is adequate but I have found that now they have gone all fashion colours their quality is really suffered including the hardware which is always failing. I won't buy from them anymore - it will be replaced with a Rambo when the time comes.

I really rate Rambos, especially the optimo. Fits skinny tb to chunky ID. They are quite long which at first i thought was a going to be an issue but they fit really well, they never move and my lot love a good roll, buck and fart! They also have a 3 year guarantee for waterproofness

i bought a cheap 100g gallop rug as i needed a rug quickly and it has been great and nit leaked even in very heavy rain. my only niggle is that the neck is a bit too big on my horse as she is 1/2 tb and doesnt have a huge neck or shoulders...so for a cob type it would be perfect..
