I have a 16.1hh ISH (grand sire on dam's side Animo and her sire is Nautilus). She was a successful and incredibly careful show jumper and did some intro/PN with mixed results ie odd stop XC as she wasn't very bold to solid fences. She is also a bit backward thinking.

This year she's had a beautiful filly (pics in my profile in albums) by Challon Z who is a Holstein x TB. I am thrilled with her and will in future hopefully have another out of her by him. However, this year I'd like to put her to a full TB to try to get a more traditional event type.

I have narrowed this down to Sula Blue and Revolution. I understand that both have super temperaments. I am edging towards Sula Blue based on his popularity on here but he is a touch bigger than I'd like (given the size of the foal she has produced) and has no progeny out and about yet - Revolution does.

Does anyone have any views or experience on the two, particularly interested in anyone that has used either of them.

Confirmation wise my mare is quite decent so I don't need anything improving particularly. She has a super jump, great canter and walk. Her trot isn't much to write home about (she dishes) but obviously not putting her to a full TB in expectation of flashy paces.

Any comments appreciated. Thanks

It would imo come down to personal preference and which on comparing to your mare suits her better..... As you say Rev has progeny on the ground along with a record whilst Sula is just really starting the stud side of his career. I would say that of the two of them Sula is probably the better performance wise as their records to date are pretty even in terms of the fact Rev 'only' went up to 2* and did one Adv and Sula is already 2*/Advanced (coming 2nd in his one and only 2*) and will be progressing onwards. Plus Sula would be the better SJer of the two just looking at the eventing records and in general he has the better results of the two... I have seen quite a few of Rev's progeny and they are all cracking so I would guess it would have to come down to you mare and a)which suits her better and b) which of the two is your own general preference.

Thanks Eventrider. I guess the issue is that they are both lovely and would both be equally suitable for differing reasons and so as a bit of a cop out was hoping someone would have some amazingly compelling reason to recommend one over the other! I was hoping to see SB in action as thought that might sway it before I made a final decision but he's had a minor knock so won't be out until June which is getting a bit late!

As competition horses I prefer sula blue.
As sires at the moment Revolution edges it for me, I prefer the Rev offspring (with the caveat that there are few SB on the ground).
Personally I'd go with Revolution

Yeah poor Sula was out for a bit but I believe he is now starting fitness work again so maybe go and visit him?? Both of them have exemplary temperaments. If XC is your mare' weak point I would personally suggest Sula as he is one of the boldest XC horses I have seen in a while but not manic bold, but a nice controlled go getter who doesn't take a lot of setting up for a fence as he isn't strong. I think it will come down to gut...

Oh no, contradictory opinions - what to do?!

Ps excuse dodgy typo in original post (stupid phone predictive text) mare is definitely not confirmed!

Tough choice! SB is the bigger, rangier sort with a lovely big ground covering stride and a real desire to try for his rider. He looked a little sticky going round Gatcombe xc when I saw him, but the Rev has some blips on his record too

Well encouraging you all think they are both lovely. Each would bring good things to the mare. I am swayed by SB's love of XC, but then the number of Rev offspring doing the job is impressive. I wish SB's babies were older! Eeeny, meeny, miney, mo!

I suppose it also depends on your plans for baby...by the time it is born hopefully Sula will be 3* so that would be a huge bonus to have a foal by him in one of is first years at proper stud just as he is hitting the highs...but then again Revs progeny will be hopefully doing more by then too.

I need the ability to see into the future. At the moment my loose plan is to wait until present filly and as yet unconceived TBx are 4 and 5 and see which is most suited to me (aspirations are only fun a amateur BE/RC) and probably sell the other unless time/funds allow otherwise so I guess my number 1 requirement is 'willing to please attitude' as they are not exactly investments!

If you have only one foal from the mare and do not yet know for certain what traits she reliably passes onto her foals, I would be tempted to go with the more proven sire, if he is passes on the qualities you are looking for.
Both good stallions but in theory you will have a more reliable expectation of what to get from Revolution based on the volume of older offspring he has.

O_P, if you're in that much a quandary, then in your shoes, I'd do a non-Clarkson style Eenny Meenny Miny Mo, and then next year, use the one that missed out this year!! :wink3:

To be serious, and in your shoes, assuming the Sula Blue is the younger of the two horses, and has a comparable record with Revolution, then I'd probably go with the younger of the two, in the hope that his future successes both in competition and his progeny, promote the value of your hoped for foals. I know what I mean, and I only hope that it makes sense!

Whatever you decide, good luck!

Alec.
