Does anyone use these rugs? Would you recommend them? It's a shame the 0 fill and Medium weights are the same colours!

Also with liners if you have a rug that fits - do you not find they make them tight underneath adding extra layers?

Also how do you find they stand up to other horses biting them? My mare has just had to go in with another mare as mine kept jumping out to get to her but the other mare can be very grumpy when hungry and does try to take a chunk out of her sometimes :(

I have a rhino. I’ve currently only got lights but old horse had the medium.
No the liners don’t make it at all right or even alter the fit at all.
Unsure about the last bit sorry as mine belonged to the rug biter as opposed to the ones getting the rugs ripped!

Can’t help with the vari layer because I use the no fill with liners and the liners attach at the neck and back with clips and are extremely light and don’t make the rug feel to small or tight at all. I use up to 300gm when one is fully clipped and it looks like a normal rug because the outer is designed to take the inners.

We have a rug trasher in the field and while the two in Shires have had to be replaced my two in their Rhinos haven’t had a mark on them.

I've read that Rhinos come up small compared to Amigo and Rambo - does anyone else find this? I've been using a 6ft 3 Amigo which is a little bit too big really (it was for a previous horse) and I tried a friends 6ft amigo which seems to fit well so now not sure what size I'd need if I went with a Rhino. I can't bare seeing a bum poking out the end of a rug!!

I have a new Rambo stable rug which at 6ft is huge and doesn’t fit either of them. A 9 year old 6ft Amigo 400 turnout which again is bigger than the Rhinos and 3 6ft Rhino no fills which fit my Connie who is 14.1 and my 15hh WB pony. It’s a bit baggy on B’s shoulders and he could probably go down to a 5.9 Rhino but they have to share liners so he has to put up with it.

Do you still fine the Rhinos smaller than Amigo?

I only have the one Amigo and I think it’s huge compared to the Rhino but the only way to tell would be to lay them out on top of each other tonight and see if there’s any difference. Happy to oblige if you don’t mind waiting till later on.

That would be lovely if you have both and don't mind comparing! The Amigo 6ft - I wouldn't want any smaller but the 6ft 3 is too big... if that helps!

I have amigos, a rhino wug lined, and rambo varilayers.
The rambo varilayers come up small compared to normal lined rambos. The varilayer makes it more bulky. My 6'3" rambo lined rug horse has a 6'6" rambo varilayer.
The varilayers are good and I would certainly have more of them.

I find the rhino lined is more tailored and fits my little mare more closely than an amigo so if I was looking at a Rhino I would tend towards the larger size. Say a 6ft amigo I would look at a 6'3" rhino.

The rhino's are good rugs. I think they would stand up too normal biting horses.

I have put rug liners in amigos, thick ones, and I haven't found that I needed a larger size to accommodate them.

This would work in my favour as if I got a 6ft 3 rhino I could still still use my 6ft3 liners instead of buying new 6ft liners?! I've found the 0 fill normal Rhino is much more expensive than the medium weight vari layer for some reason!

I would have thought that was a reasonable starting point. Rug prices are really strange. I have also found similar discrepancies.

Mine wears 6'3 in Rambo and Amigo. I tried a 6'3 Rhino on him but it fit like a mini skirt and also the Rhino Wug neck was too tight. I don't recall how the length fit, but they're definitely smaller in drop and perhaps width IME.

They're nice rugs though.

Yes I found they come up small (short in length). I was also disappointed with the quality of the stitching which fell apart in places although being a bit on the small side for my horse probably didn’t help. I’ve since bought an Amigo no-fill and a Rambo Duo with 100g and 200g liners. However the 6ft 6in Duo had been passed onto my oldie who’s normally in a 6ft 3 and I’ve just spent an eye-watering amount on another Duo in a 6ft 9 because although the smaller size is ok the bigger one just gives more depth and length for staying out in not so lovely weather and because one liners are in I think it could get a bit tight.

So hard to know what to do! I know and love Amigos so not sure if to stick with them but heard so many good things about Rhino but they aren't cheap! I also don't want to have some Amigo and some rhino if they come up small because of using liners

Can you look at some place like GS equestrian who usually have decent prices but also do free returns so you are safe to order and try without the faff and expense of sending stuff back?

Does anyone on your yard have any of the rugs in the sizes you think you need that you could try? When I was deciding which size Amigo to buy I tried on my friends 6ft 9 and it was definitely a better fit than the 6ft 6 he measured as especially once the head pulls the rug forward for grazing so I’m pleased that I went for the size larger.

Well that was an interesting exercise. All rugs 6ft, I laid the Rambo stable rug down first, laid the Amigo on top and the Rhino on top of that.

The Rambo was about 2 inches longer but it doesn’t have a tail flap. The Amigo and the Rhino were exactly the same size and interestingly all three rugs are exactly the same shape in the neck and shoulder. The only difference between the Amigo and Rhino were the leg arches are in slightly different places. All three were exactly the same depth.

Isn’t that ridiculous! I can understand between brands to an extent but the same brand should stick with the same measurements surely!

So I’m currently using a 6ft 3 amigo but it does move around a bit and looks a bit like a dress on her back end coz it’s quite big! I tried my friends 6ft 0 fill amigo and that seemed to fit her nicely

oh I just remembered I bought the amigo varilayer in my ponies usual size and it was tiny! She could have gone up two sizes without too much trouble. Much much smaller than the usual rambos I use

liners everytime! They make life so much easier, can be layered as needed and chucked in the washing machine so no expensive rug washer needed

You only need one outer no fill, a 100gm and a 200gm liner to have a usable system, the liners are so light and not at all bulky they take up very little space. Having three or four different weight rugs will take up far more room. As an example I have one of those black wheeled trunks from Homebase and it holds 3 Rhino no fills, 3 HW liners, 3 HW insulator stable rugs and it is half empty.

I think it depends on what livery you have. I’m on full livery and I did the liner system until when buying a new rug one, one of the staff said it was much easier for them if we had a rug of different weight as, with so many horses to do, faffing about with liners took up more time than taking one rug off and throwing another one on.

I’m on DIY so I do it all my self but just don’t have much storage Space!
