My horse doesnt kick per-se but has done once when a horse was very close behind. its our first hunt also (although she is 12 so is a small chance she may have done years ago but i doubt it)
Should i put a red ribbon in just to discourage people getting to close ?? id feel dreadful if she kicked someone not that she probably would its just she's a bit mareish at times!

Sometimes out hunting you just have to stop on some tiny lane, and its then when people let their horses chew your horse's bottom, and then wonder why yours kicks out. I would put one on for the first couple of times you go out.

Well mine has only ever kicked once, that was out hunting, and although I did discipline him I did feel he was only partly to blame because he did have his bottom chewed a fair bit. Better safe then sorry, and have a super day out :) x

I don't know the legalities, but someone once told me that putting a ribbon in the horses tail makes things very difficult for you if the horse does kick, as you are admitting it is a 'known problem' Same with the tabards that read 'nervous horse' or similar

I don't think thats true. At least it warns people to stay out of the way and so reducing the risk of an accident. Its there fault then if they are in kicking distance!

i agree with you Sarah. Do you remember Eb kicking Paddy that time? - shed never done it before and has never done it since but theres always a chance when theyre so excited and having lots of fun!

Yes. do put a red ribbon in her tail. Also, keep out of the crowd at gates and so on, and keep a respectable distance away from the crush. You can later gauge when she's settled down and remove the ribbon accordingly.

Putting red tape on your horses tail will show that you know it may/can kick.
The best thing to do is put green on, it means young/npovice/inexperienced horse. People are more likely to stay away from you then!

haha Im trying to get there!!
Must admit though one of the first things i ever read about as a kid was the 2 different ribbon colours and what they meant! When id sit dreaming of having a pony to take to shows etc back in the day!!

You know I am 100% positive I replied to this already!

Anyway!! Yep its not easy to know everything (I am sure there is tons I dont know yet!) BUT something like tail ribbons are basic and if a person is doing their best to warn people about a potentially dangerous sitation then those around them should have enough about them to find out what they are being warned about!

Like everything, if you dont know, ASK, no one minds at all!

(I will never forget leaving a hunt and being told "Good Evening" and looking puzzled and muttering "Good afternoon" back!!!!!!!)

To be honest, if someone doesn't know WHAT it means, surely it's common blooming sense to keep clear anyway, you'd think - whether it means the horse is a kicker, a stallion, very nervous, 1st timer, whatever – all amounts to the same; it’s not there for fashion, so it’s there FOR A REASON!!! It's unlikley to be 'feel free to run up the back of me, as I definitely don't kick', is it?!

Just read that thread - very good. I have followed on foot for the last couple of years and have really got the bug. I follow with a friend who has hunted all her life and she has taught me lots. I was hoping to ride for the first time this year but my pony is injured - hopefully might be able to give it a go towards the end of the season. I now think that hunting is the best thing about Winter - stuff Christmas :)

My horses have never needed a ribbon - well, tried one on the youngster this year but it just made her buck, so never mind! - anyway, ribbon or not, would anyone ever ram another horse up the ar*e anywhere except hunting? Drives me nuts, I've seen more than one good horse with tendon damage as a result. This isn't aimed at anyone, just a spur of the moment rant!!

I'd go for green!

On the point of hunting etiqutte (sp) my 5 year old knows what both colours mean! He even asked if he would have to wear something green if he goes out this year as it would be his first time riding!! Ah bless!

I wish more people on the hunting field would stick to the simple etiquette. Well done for finding this all out beforehand. The best thing to do would to out of the main bunch to start with to allow your horse to find its feet in the hunt field and gradually integrate it over the course of the day if it has settled and is not concerned by all the goings on. i would wear a green tail ribbon and be aware of what is happening around you and turn your horses head towards other horses if they pass close, just to be sure your horses bum is turned away. Enjoy it when you do go x

If your horse is not a kicker per se - then no I wouldn't put a red ribbon in the tail. If someone is stupid enough to ram up your backside - then they do it at their own risk.

However, if the horse was a habitual kicker - then I wouldn't take it hunting full stop.

Have fun!!!! :) :) :)

i think green is the way to go. as it is her first hunt so would be good just to have as a safety net. she wont kick unless someone rams right up her bum so should be fine. hopefully she wont be in season (think shes having her last one now) as that has been the only time ive ever known her strike out..and even then it was a pretty half arsed attempt!
