Dear Horse and Hound Community, my name is Verena and I am from Austria and I am new to this message board. I recently bought a Rice Beaufort Horse Trailer from a private seller in the UK and I kindly ask for your help and expertise with determining which type of trailer this is.
I read there should be a serial number on the trailer but according to the seller and also to the garage where the trailer is parked at the moment there is no serial number or chassis plate to be found (which apparently is not unusual with older models). But unfortunately in order to register the horse trailer in Austria we need some papers or indication which trailer it is/which year it was built or ideally a manual. Does anyone of you know exactly which type of trailer this is or has a manual for it at home? Or does such a thing even exist?
I also once saw someone mention that they have contact to former Rice Richardson employees. Me and my fiancee would be very greatful for any tipps / hints about how to go forward to find out more about this trailer. Thank you very much in advance and best wishes from Salzburg!

I think you are going to struggle. There should have been a plate on it. They are usually on the front near the jockey wheel. Lots got lost over the years though. Looking at the photos, thats a Rice Beaufort, as you said, what more information do you need?

Hello Leo, thank you for the reply! I was hoping for some definite answer about which type it is if possible to tell by the photos. Mine has only a window out front but located lower than on the pictures of the Europe or Beauforts I have seen on the site you mentioned. I guess it could be just an older model. I would need the model in order to determine the MAM. Also if it exists some manual or official description of this trailer would be very helpful in order to go through the registration process by the Austrian authorities.

The MAM is worked out from the tyres if theres no plate. There should be some writing on the tyre wall that says the load. Add them all together and that's your MAM.

They started making them in the seventies I think so they have been around for a while. They also made them to order so customised them for people, which means that there are lots and lots of variations about. The Europa is the smaller one, the Beaufort was taller and longer I think, so you could identify the model by the measurements.

Europa 10' 7" x 5' 6" x 7' 0" headroom 2300 kg
Beaufort Double 10' 7" x 5' 6" x 7' 6" headroom 2600 kg
Beaufort Sixty 11' 7" x 5' 11" x 7' 6" headroom 2700 kg
Equipoise 12' 5" x 5' 11" x 7' 8" headroom 2700 kg
Beaufort Treble 12' 5" x 5' 11" x 7' 6" headroom 2700 kg

Just make sure you don't rely on those weights. The trailer you have may have had the floor replaced and/or been modified, so use the tyres still to work that out.

Hello Leo, thank you so much for that overview and the info about the tyre weight, that's really a great help to us :-)! We will check on that once we are over in the UK again and get out the measuring tape. We will be sure to take it to a weighing bridge too and have it checked out by the RAC as well I think. Thank you again and have a lovely evening!

Leo, our horse trailer looks the same as the one above..... each of our 4 tyres show 104/102R which I assume is the load weight. Does this mean it'll have a MAM of 3400kg??? That does seem really heavy to me. I've linked photos below to check showing the trailer and the tyres too. No weight badge as its a circa 1963 trailer so it's long gone. If I pass the B+ E test, I'm right that I can drive up to 3500kg MAM vehicle with up to 3500kg MAM trailer depending on capacity of the vehicle of course. Does this mean my vehicle will need to be equipped to pull 3400kgs? Or does it need to simply be based on the ACTUAL weight of our trailer with kitchen in (1000kg). It's being converted to a kitchen so no horses will ever be used in it. So it'll weigh on a weighbridge less than 1000kgs. I'm still confused even though I've asked so many people. I can't imagine any normal 2litre vehicle that'll have towing capacity of 3400kgs. Does that MAM seem right to you? The chassis is aluminium, walls are light aluminium (Not wood) and roof and apex and fiberglass so it's really light. I can actually just about lift it by hand and my partner can move the trailer by hand.
