I keep seeing rice bran mentioned for weight gain, is it actually any good and is it safe for a cushings/lami horse?
Where do people get it from, and is rice bran oil any good as an alternative?

I'm having a fair bit of trouble putting weight on my mare, I'm currently using solution mash (and linseed), which worked initially but now doesn't seem to be have as much of an effect. She has constant access to hay and also a hay net of straw as well (if she doesn't have that she eats her bed, and I read its safer to feed straw from a net to reduce risk of colic?). She'll eat the straw even if she has hay left so it's not that i'm not giving her enough hay, she's just stupid :o She gets fed 2 twice a day with a bucket of chaff at night as well, so she's getting constant access to forage.

Any ideas other that possibly rice bran? She can't have molasses or alfalfa

Thanks :D

Ready mash has molglo in, and is quite high in starch. Solution mash also has a higher energy content i think :S

Forgot to say she also has metabalance as well as her linseed (and she does have a fair amount of linseed)

Maybe not then, I use a feedmark original balancer with my girlie so it maximises what she gets from her food. What about the coconut feed base, sorry name escapes me!

Rice bran oil is used extensively by people preparing horses for youngstock sales. My vet sells it for €90 a litre  but I get it from Tesco for £1.99 for 500ml :) Brilliant stuff, I swear by it (and get odd looks in Tesco when I have nothing but RB oil in my basket).

I give my boy equi jewel rice bran along with linseed and I have seen a difference, but could not say for sure if its one over the other or both helping him out on condition but he is looking a lot better and omg - shiney :-)

I buy the equi jewel from my local feed shop I think it's around £36 but I could be wrong as buy lots of feed at same time.

Copra meal is the coconut feed base - my understanding is that Copra has a lower starch/NSC content than a stabilised rice bran product although the objectives (high oil content for condition) are the same.

Equi Jewel has molasses in it. I feed Falcon Feeds Omega Rice which is rice bran and linseed with no sugar. Its fantastic stuff, adds weight and bulk without heating them up.
