hi all

i have been offered a double rice trailer, with living... as part ex for Katie (my lorry). but i have no idea what sort of price they fetch and what they're worth...

the general HHO consensus is that i am asking too little for my lorry... which is not the end of the world - as long as i can afford a decent trailer and a chunk of money towards my 4x4.

i have looked on google, and don't seem to be able to find a rice trailer with living to compare it to. the one in question has a little living area with a sink, a toilet, a horse shower (i don't even know what one of those are... :o ). it does look nice.

has anyone heard of them? what are they like? any ideas on how much they go for? the owners of the one i've been offered think it's about 8yrs old.

any thoughts anyone?

jam rolypoly pudding and custard if you have ever heard of them... :D

Nope :(

Had a Google but couldn't find one either.

You'll need a bit of a beast to tow it though?

thank you for trying MrsM (especially as you must be floating around on cloud 9)... i'm not sure what to say. she wants £3 for it as a part ex... i was hoping to get a trailer for less than £1k. but... if it's totally fab, it might be worth thinking about. as i REALLY like the idea of having a bit of living/somewhere to make a cuppa at shows...

i just don't want to sell katie :( i could make lots of cuppas in her. and sit round the table drinking them.

*rocks in corner, wailing*

Why not telephone Rice, it sounds like a special order if it is a reasonably new trailer, as I hadn't heard of any Rice with living.

I have a equi trek, large bench seat, sits 3/4 or 1 person can sleep on it, very small table, two gas ring things and two cupboards. tack locker at the back in the horse bit. carrys two up to 17.3 (is the old version) 6 years old. We pull it with a Toyota land-cruiser and have no problems. BTW i love that your box has her own FB page :D

Here m'duck, I have a suggestion....

... don't sell Katie :D

Sorry, but you really don't seem to want to sell her :o.

Running a 4x4 is not cheap. I am a greedy soul and had a 4x4 and a lorry. Loved them both. Would have got rid of the 4x4 before the lorry though (if the lorry hadn't died). I liked being able to see my horses. I loved filling it up with people and gear and horses and going places :D. I loved it on rainy days and I loved it on sunny days. I cried when Bessie Box went :(. We have Hugh the Trailer now, and he's grand (or will be when he's finished!), but when we've moved and got settled I'm having another lorry :D

before i bought katie i looked at the equitrek trailers... they are very posh! you're a lucky bunny. out of interest, do you know how much your equitrek would be worth now - at 6yrs old?

p.s. katie deserves a whole website. she's so ace. :)

A friend of mine sold one about a year ago,she is a nightmare to get hold of at times :) but I will have a go and see what she sold it for. It was a lovely trailer, I imagine very heavy to tow but gave the horses a great ride and so nice to have somewhere 'indoors' to sit down at a show.

She sold it because it was really just a little too small for her IDxTB, she was rather sad as she loved the trailer!

see, MrsM, you're bad. i HAVE to sell her. i'm being made redundant and starting a whole new career that requires a big car/4x4. and i need the money from her sale to help fund the 4x4. and my new career isn't likely to make anywhere near as much as i'm on now...

i am going to cry when katie goes. i might hang onto her back wheel... :(

oooh, can you ask her? pm me if you prefer. find out how old her one was too. i wonder if they only made them for a short length of time. hence they're hard to find?

thank yoooooou muchly! :D

Okay, voice of reason (yikes!): if you're career isn't going to make much money, think carefully hun....

I drive a Disco (diesel). I do just short of 160 miles a day, five days a week (all motorway). It costs about £90 to fill up. I fill up three times a week...

OK, back with more info. My friend's trailer was a Rice Badminton and as far as she remembers they were only made in the 60's and 70's. Hers was late 70's (I'm shocked, it was in amazing condition). She sold it for £1800 a year or so ago. She said the one you have been offered may be a Beaufort adapted specially. She also suggested you contact someone who advertises Rice Spares in the back of Horse and Hound, apparently he is the fount of all knowledge rice-wise and would probably be able to help.

Hope that's some use :)

we have one - it's fab!

takes 2 big horses - 17hh plus and has a litle hob/grill, basin and storage cupboards

It tows brilliantly - is very stable, particularly good on motorways

We have had a granulastic (rubber) floor added and long distance axles as my OH regularly towed between England and Scotland

he can't rate it more highly :)

best thing about them in his opinion is that every part is replaceable so they last forever if well maintained :)

we tow with a Range Rover so no issues with weight

Hi p :D
G told me it was specially adapted.I know the man who did it he has been doing work down our yard. Why dont you ring her and have chat shes really good friend and easy to talk to.;)

I would think that a 4x4 capable of legally pulling that would cost you a bomb to fuel!

I would agree with Mrs M, and think that you would be better off keeping Katie, and buying a more fuel efficient car for daily use.

Are you sure that you'd need a 4x4 for your new career? Would a van or estate car be just as suitable?

xx

I agree with Mrs M and puppy 4x4's are very expensive ours old one Hank the tank was asuzuki vitara 2ltr v6 cost us a fortune. took 80 squid to fill according to my husband did 23 miles to the gallon (to me i was at the petrol station every few days) we sold hank and bought "THE RAV!!" Id keep katie if i were you!

It might be completely unsuitable for you but how about keeping Katie and buying something small but with a bit of '4 wheel drive-ness' to it like a Suzuki Jimny? :D

I've heard that despite their petite size compared to proper 4x4 they are actually quite tough and hardy, might be worth a look? They don't cost any more to run than an average normal car but it wouldn't be tough enough to pull a trailer i'm afraid.

Here's one: http://www.bukkehave.com/images/products/Suzuki-Jimny_11_9_2008_35_57_l.jpg

I say Keep your lorry too !!! 4x4 and trailer =$$$$££££££ to run.. Buy whats right for work and keep the lorry rather than running about in a 25 MPG monster I looked at a trailer and just one car for work and it just dosent work out my fiesta is doing 62 mpg and a 4x4 pick up will do half that so doubling my weekly fuel bills to do 500+ miles .. work it out carefully before you jump!!!

^^^ what he says.

Just because people don't now drive road cars off road doesn't mean they can't cope with pretty tough terrain. I have only just given up using my 10 year old Skoda Octavia 1.9 Tdi estate to pull a trailer full of muck up a muddy track to my field.

The original spec for the 2CV was a vehicle to carry a farmer and his wife with a basket of eggs across a ploughed field.

As you do seem to love Katie I'd keep her and get something cheap to run. My Skoda has loads of carrying capacity, will tow perfectly happily and does better than 50mpg - and it's road tax and servicing costs are low.
