Someone has told me that I have to be extra careful allowing my mare with foal at foot access to very long rich grass. Does anyone have any advice on this. I thought she would need the extra grass.
Hi,
unless your mare is a very good doer i.e native that is too fat despite suckeling a foal, rich grass should provide the extra calories she needs to feed the foal and be ok.
I have just been advised by a very experienced breeder to put my mare onto richer grass. It helps with milk production, and feeding a foal makes great demands of the mares body, which requires good nutrition to compensate.
