Went along as a spectator to a private clinic for a bad (impossible) loader that Richard Maxwell was running. I've been to an open clinic/demo of his before and the man is brilliant. No magic, no high pitched sales stuff, just consistency, leadership, total understanding of a horse's mind, quiet patience and utter professionalism. He spent a good 45 minutes on ground work, getting to know the horse and establish the basis of the relationship, then inside 10 minutes the horse was trotting calmly up the lorry ramp on his own. Since I'm probably old enough to be his mother, I was hoping to ask him if I could adopt him but I chickened out. {{{sigh}}}

He is fantastic isnt he. I am hoping to send Cally to him as a 2 year old for some 'lessons' then back again to be broken. Also want to do some clinics with him to learn to long-rein properly as I havent had lessons for years and years.

Definately a fan.

I had him out to Hannah three years ago after trying numerous people... Hannah was terrified of loading, she would shake at the bottom of the ramp and if I ever did get her in (very rarely) she would do anything to get out, including run over me

Richard was absolutely fantastic... And Hannah is a real testimonial to him! She now drags me up the horsebox ramp without a care in the world, stands quietly while being tied up and travels perfectly. I could ask anyone to put her on the horsebox without a second thought, and I never ever worry about her loading. Even when she had her foal who took a while to load, she stood patiently and waited for him!!!

I am hoping to send my yearling to him for backing when the time comes...

Me too me too, we sent him a horse we bought a few years ago when everyone else was saying shoot him cos he's dangerous.
Richard is absolutely the best trainer ever and I would recommend him to anyone. Its such a shame he can't take them in anymore as a visit to your yard is not always enough time to sort deep rooted probs.

Yep another fan here too

i think Max is the most phenomenal horseman. I love how he takes the best out of everything including his training in the cavalry and puts it altogether to form something the horse responds to and hes not set in his ways, he realises that horses are individual and what works for some doesnt work for others. And thank god none of this selling speal either - love him!

Agree with all of the above. My horse wouldn't box, I had tried everything else, so went to him for that and at the same time to be broken. Best money ever spent. When I had a minor glitch re the boxing Max came to me and sorted out and we have never looked back and that was 11 years ago.

Would be interested to know how much anyone has been charged for a visit from him as we know a young 12 year old kiddie who has been having (for some unknown reason) trouble loading her pony this year. Always loaded brilliantly but now, can't even get it near the ramp. She's tried other family and friends lorries but the same thing has happened. We're too far away (and lack time at the moment) to go see what's going on, but she lives about 20 minutes away from Richard Maxwell's place, contacted him to see about some help, explained her age and what was happening and got told an exhorbitant price. Considering her mum and dad makes her pay for all expenses out of pocket money, birthday, xmas money etc, it is out of her price range to pay, so is going to have to wait until the pony decides to load or we can get over to her to give her a hand. Does anyone know of anyone else they could recommended who doesn't charge as much.

Another fan.

Just to let you know, that Richard has a new yard now which means that he can take horses in for training. If you go to his website (just Google Richard Maxwell) you will see the details. He is also now putting up blogs for visiting horses so that you can follow their progress. But be warned - the blogs are addictive!!
