Am considering getting Richard Maxwell out for a consultation with my youngster...we have some confidence issues (his) which is now effecting mine (never before suffered with confidence issues, but following a trip to A&E via air ambulance...well you know!!) My little man is such an honest boy, not a bad bone in his body that I feel he really deserves the best chance possible...Has any one had him for any issues?

I've had him to both of mine, its well worth the money, its not just a sort of quick fix, he will give you the methods to use in all of your training so you can progress yourself. PM me if you want details.

I have had Max to my horse and it was worth every penny. I have also watched him work with others, many youngsters, and again he is gentle, calm but firm. It is a lot of money, but you do get about a half a day for that and he will work with your horse and you, to give you the tools to carry on. After that, he is always available at the end of the phone if you have a problem.

One other thing I would say it that his methods do not only work for the initial problem you have. My boy for some reason started to object to loading which had never been a problem, and I went back to the groundwork exercises over a few days and sorted it. He has not been a problem to load since, and the original problem has no recurred.

Hi , havent used RM but Ive had a trained person ( Sarah Dent ) from Monty Roberts/Kelly Marks and I wouldnt have my horse if it hadnt been for the above lady. So worth looking around , there maybe someone close to you who could help at your place .

My friend had him for her horse that had loading issues. Within 30 mins the horse was loading without an issue. He gave her homework to do which she did and now her horse is a confident traveller. He is brilliant. Can't recommend him highly enough and a lovely man to boot. Worth every penny.

He's brilliant. I attended a local yard where one livery was having serious loading problems with her very talented horse. He was about £400 I think but she recouped a good chunk of it by selling tickets at £10 a time for interested people to come and watch. There had to be about 20 people there.

Sent mine to him a few years ago as the horse I bought turned out to be drugged and had many issues. After being told to shoot him by other so called ' professional' i sent him to Max for 6 weeks.

Best money ever spent. He gave me my horse back.
The other thing is he doesn't just take your money and be done with it, we got sent away with homework and the confidence to work with the horse and Max was always on the end of the phone if needed.

Personally wouldn't consider anyone else.

PS also had a half day session with Michael Peace and couldn't get on with him at all.

I (sadly) bought a horse that naps and rears. Michael Peace came out and could not get anywhere with her. He was very nice about it, and he did not charge me the full amount of money. He said my Mare would have to go to him for 6 weeks and I could not afford that. He said his wife should not have booked our problem for a home visit. I am NOT saying anything bad about Michael, he seems a nice guy. I am only saying, make sure you speak to Max personally and explain what your problem is, you don't want to pay out all that money and find it is a problem he feels he needs more than an afternoon session.

I like this idea!

Max is great and I second what everyone else has said. I've had a consultation @ £400, plus three ridden lessons @ about £50 / £60 each (can't precisely remember). I also know a number of people who have done the same, as well as attended his yard for courses.

I have seen him resolve a multitude of issues with ease, sympathy and poise - including horses that won't go forward, that go forward too much, that rear, that won't load, that won't jump ditches, that won't canter on the correct leg and many more. Needless to say not all of these were my horse!

BUT what you have to be aware of is that to get true value out of the money you spend you need to do your homework AFTER he has gone home. This is what many people can't (or won't) committ to.

Speak to his office as you may be able to either join in a session with someone else or organise a learning day (where other folk pay to spectate - easy if you are on a big yard) - all of which will save money.

Good luck, it has been the best horsey money I have ever spent. :)

Oh - and he is most definately NOT fluffy - despite the distinct fluffyness of many of the posters on his forum.

He came out to my youngster last year to help with a needle phobia. I must admit whilst better, he's still not great for the vet, but I did find max very informative and learnt loads from him in that afternoon! Wouldn't hesitate to use him again if needed. He's also been to my instructors yard and worked with a problem loader to great effect! Fixed him totally. Agree with Harriettie tho, definately not fluffy in any way, practical, firm, a great horseman and above all totally fair!

I haven't seen him for behavioural issues but he came to do alot of the horses on my yards backs. I wanted him to do Kane's but I warned him as I do everyone who goes in my horses stable that he's partically sighted, very spooky and will try to avoid a stranger if you approach him..he wouldn't hurt anyone on purpose but he will push you out of his way if he starts to panic. Max raised his eyebrows and said 'we'll see'! Honestly in the 7 years I've had my horse no one except me has walked into his stable without him shying, spooking and trying to hide in a corner...but Max walked in and within seconds my horse was laying his head in his hands and was totally relaxed. Max asked me what on earth I'd been wittering about and this horse wasn't in the slightest bothered..Lol!!

Would trust him to help 100% after seeing that, he's got something that horses definately relate to and his manner is awe inspiring to watch.

I had him out to my yearling who was mahoosive and very opinionated. Max said he had never met such an opinionated yearling. My boys party trick was to rear when excited and strike with his front feet. and was not worried if you were in the way.

He used his head as a battering ram against Max's chest for 2 hours as wasn't bothered by anything or anyone, To which Max said if we didn't sort this, he would be a horrible 4 year old. Well 4 years down the line, he is now a lovely 90% of the time well mannered 17.2hh 5 year old.

But I had to ensure all the work I continued with post Max's departure.

Well worth the £400 for the afternoon.

His books are great and he's in one of my nag mags this month too. A fascinating person. I almost wish I had a problem horse so I could get him out, alas mine are perfect, oh well:p

The only person I heard had a failure didn't do the homework. He came to see 2 horses on the same yard, both with loading problems - one did the homework & has never looked back, one didn't & the horse reverted. To me that's owner failure not trainer failure. I was considering getting him out for mounting issues with my youngster but I have to say that working out how much it would cost has focussed my mind with good effect!

Great responses....and yes there are failures...mainly if the work isn't followed up, unfortunately it is a bit like weight watchers, if you don't count the calories the weight will go back on.

However if he arrives at your yard and he cant help no matter how far he has travelled he doesn't charge anything.

:)

THE MAN IS A GOD :D
I had Max out to my big horse that wouldnt load, by the end of the visit he was walking/ trotting up the ramp, allowing me to throw the rope over his neck , turning and standing waiting for the partition to go across.
I got homework to ensure he continued to load and never had another bit of bother another happy customer best £400 i spent, we had to fly him to scotland, so he was a bit dearer
