I know this should be in vet but there are always more people in here.

One of my horses is booked to have surgery next week, and the surgeon is Richard Payne from Rossdales. Has anyone had any experiences with him?

He is doing a neurectomy (PSD) and removal of 3 vertebrae. I am feeling quite sick over the whole thing as not sure I am really making the right decision (just seems like such an awful lot to put the boy through) and also I had a VERY bad experience at Rossdales a couple of years ago (if the vet in question hadnt put me in such a state at the time, I would have punched him). I am still VERY angry about it (5 yrs later) and if I ever saw that particular vet again, I would punch him.

I swore I would never go back there, but my local vet really rates Richard and says that he is the best surgeon. So, all in all, feeling very stressed at the moment. Any experiences (or recommendations of other vets) are welcome!

More a question of do you want to do surgery full stop. I had a neurectomy on my horse which I was initially happy about but in retrospect I am not so sure. Are they really removing 3 vertebrae? That seems anatomically impossible - maybe you are just short-handing the description.
The end of the day, what are your options. Horses & surgery are not a great mix, sometimes it can work, etc, but the horse has no understanding of what is happening, so from its perspective it can be pretty traumatic.
Good luck!

He has impinging spinous processes from the 10th to the 15th thoracic vertebrae - i.e. they need to operate to open up the spine. Maybe I was over simplifying above, essentially they will be operating on 3 of the vertebrae to create room, so not removal as such but cutting down the vertebrae.

I am not sure; waited ages for this surgeon to be available and now it is almost upon us I cant help but be really nervous and really scared.

Don't worry...so basically your horse has KS and suspensory damage? The KS op will be fine you would never know my horse has had it. The neurectomy I'm less sure about, it can only ever be a temporary fix in my view and the ligament can continue to damage.
