OK so I laying all the blame for today firmly at ISZ's door as she started the 'numpty moments thread' to which I had added nothing, as I couldn't think of any numpty moments to add!

I had a a BE90/100/90/100 wobble last week. Since his 6 week 'holiday' Fugly has been XC schooling and breezed round PN-ish fences without a second glance. He is also fairly consistently jumping 1.10-1.15 at home and his flatwork is much improved. So I entered the BE100 at Richmond. HOWEVER (and it's a big 'however') his last (and only) eventing outing was BE90 at Oasby 2 months ago and he is pitifully short of competition experience. So I wibbled and emailed Jen Caley to ask her to move him to the BE90 if there was room. I heard nothing for a few days and had got my head round the BE100 idea only to get an email reply saying 'job done'. I hadn't the heart (nor the b*lls :p) to ask her to change him back, after all I may need a proper favour one day! So BE90 it was.

Dressage, as luck would have it, was on the most sloped of the 4 arenas and when you're 5 and nearly 17.2, being asked to canter in an outline downhill is quite a feat of balance. He was pretty good but changed behind in the last two strides of the first canter (something he hasn't done since his holiday ) so I trotted early. The rest was pretty nice so I was a wee bit disappointed with 39. I haven't seen the sheet yet so I'm not sure what the judge didn't like, but on seeing the other scores I cheered up a bit as there were plenty in the 40s and we were pretty much plum middle of the section.

The it all went a wee bit Pete Tong...... :(

Showjumping looked a wee bit on the tiddly side to me, especially the short-ish double of uprights at 8 which was the smallest fence on the course. Jumped beautifully until we got to 8, sat back as much as I could between a and b but still rolled the second part. It's kind of inevitable at this stage, and it didn't help that the fences were so small. I gave him a pat and was just thinking to myself that I could live with 4 faults when out of the corner of my eye I saw the course-builder waving frantically at me just as we sailed past fence 9. Fence 9? Whoops, I hadn't noticed that one . Tugged poor Fugs round in a sharp circle to get back to it (another 4 faults ) and inevitably we were a bit unbalanced and panicky so had it down . Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr  . Please will someone take this horse away and give it to the jockey it deserves, not a brainless numpty like me  :(. On the upside we didn't get any time faults.......

The offending tiny double is the red fence in the background:

My groom was late and had the good sense (or timing) to arrive just after I'd show-jumped so she missed the whole sorry debacle and I gave her Fugs to change boots whilst I beat myself on the head with a big lump of wood until I felt slightly better :p.

XC was the usual - nothing too taxing and to be honest I was wishing we were setting out on the BE100 course. I'd probably have been pretty happy to have been sat on him in the start box for the Novice if truth be told as I don't think there was anything he wouldn't have coped with.

Gratuitious picture for Thistle of me being nice to the XC steward ;):

He sailed round in a lovely rhythm and made it feel like nothing. No dodgy strides, no wobbly moments and never touched a fence. I did wonder when we jumped into the double near the end why I was finding the distance slightly long as that's usually not a problem on Fugly, but kicked on and jumped it nicely on the one stride. It was only on my way to the last fence that I remembered that it should have been a 2 stride double . Whoops. I have jumped that combination on countless horses for years and know that it's a nice 2-stride distance if you jump from the middle upright to the middle upright. It's only Fugly that could make one stride feel easy!

Gratuitious bum shot at the second water (the one that used to be a horrible open ditch):

We were one of only a handful inside the time so my moment of numptyness cost me 8th place :(. I phoned my husband and he said 'basically the horse is great but you let it down!'. Couldn't have summed it up better myself :(.

So form an orderly queue to line up and kick my behind. As the above photo shows there's plenty to aim at........ ;)

All those on target can have some sauv blanc and Sainsbury's Japanese rice crackers (to which I am addicted and have been reliably informed that they contain no calories whatsoever).

The two pro pics are kind permission of Chris Lax photography. I had to buy something to cheer me up......

Oh hard luck, I've jumped the wrong fence backwards (no 7 instead of no2 so very early bath), and missed a fence and left the arena. I was going to post on ISZ's thread but there are simply too many to list!!!! Don't beat yourself up sh*t happens!!!!

I appreciate that my opinion is probably not one that you should take on board, but I read that report and thought 'does it really matter that you went the wrong way?'. Because from my impression of your day, you went wrong once and had a needless 4 faults - meh, it happens, rather than that make a mistake that has any lasting impact on him.

I think if you can come out of hilly arena on a big young horse that hasn't been out recently, safe in the knowledge that you remained upright and within the boards then it's all good in the hood (god I'm so cool with my street talk ;) ) and the XC sounds like fab.

So really, when you're getting a whinge from your beloved and attempt to suffocate yourself under a pile of posh crackers (Japanese rice crackers?! Have you forgotten you're a Northerner? :p) just think 'sod it, I've got a 5yo I could Novice on' and suddenly the world doesn't seem too awful after all ;) :D

Fugly is looking Fabulous and it sounds like it was a great educational day out. You will walk the SJ course more carefully in future ;)
Just completely jealous of you being there when we did not make it this time
What was the ground condition like on XC - I was thinking it may be pretty hard over that way...
Is it Hutton next then?

Oldgit - I could never come close to your catalogue of disasters. Sorry, but you do seem to have more than your fair share!. I think we could maybe stage an organised boycott of ISZ's thread?

Megan - thank you, that's the attitude I need. Unfortunately it was an extra 8 faults as we got penalised for circling AND for knocking it down. Really all should be 'good in the hood' as you so trendily put it, and the wine is helping me persuade myself into a positive frame of mind . I think that as a former Scot/adopted Yorkshirewoman I should point out for the interest of balance that the Rice Crackers are from the Sainsbury's 'value' range and the butcher was out of pork scratchings..... ;)

DHB - thank you, he feels fabulous too. XC ground wasn't too bad, they'd aerovated it all and left the grass pretty long - so long that my terrier struggled to see out! I'm heading for the Sunday BE100 at Hutton, but have the riding club areas and Bramham before that. I think I've conned someone into keeping him ticking over for me when I'm away walking the first 2 weeks in June.

Well I am dressage writing on the Sunday so may see you or not depending on how hard they work me :p If you are in my ring I can always add a few points ;)
Oh yes your big walk - are you feeling fully fit for it then? I must go over and sponsor you. When do you set off?

Look on the brightside, you had a fun day bar a blonde moment.
2 out of 3 aint bad :D

Rather that at Intro than Intermediate eh? which is obviously where Fugs is heading.

Well done, he looks great....

BTW you rang whilst Baydale and I were stuffing coffee cake down our necks.. if you had kept her talking a little longer I might have managed to nab the rest of hers..Mrs Baydale Snr makes a mean cake :D

sounds gd to me!ok,you had a muppet moment sjing ;) but better to have one now at an intro than at ur first 1* ! Love the pics!

sounds as if Fugs had a fun educational day, that's the most important thing at this stage, isn't it? Also, getting your daft moments out of the way at BE90 sounds like a very smart thing to do imho... nice pics, looking good.

Fugs looks fantastic as always, he looks like he is maturing nicely. Its not nice cantering a large youngster down a slope, OH gets an ear bashing when he makes me do it at home:(, but I can see where he is coming from:)

As the others have said much better to make a mistake at intro rather than higher up the levels. The xc sounded spot on.

As for pork scratchings our local butcher always has a good supply, could send some for you to keep you going on the long walk:D

Fugs looks great :), lovely photos and wow at the 1 stride distance, especially having achieved 3 strides there on both a pony and small horse!

Well done :)!

Stop beating yourself up over it... did exactly the same thing last year at a riding club ode.. popped over fence 8, started to pull up and the commentator had forgotten fence 9 too and started to announce "and that's just the four faults then for..." when I went "oh sh*t" did a sharp 180 degree turn and made it over 9, fortunately though without crossing my tracks!

Anyway, rest of it sounds great, and his showjumping was basically great just too small for him really and dare I say you felt the same so were a bit casual when walking the course :D

Onwards and upwards... Go Fugs!!!

GB what you'll do just so you can post on ISZ's thread

shame it didn't go to plan but obviously far too easy for fab giants like Fugs its time he joins the other big boyz :D

Fugly looks like he's turning into a really smart horse for the future, and so what about the SJ. At least you didn't go through the finish and get E'ed.

Wow at the XC double striding - will we call him Murphy instead of Fugly???

Fiona

Doh *kick* :p

No soothing words from me you blinkin' Scottish/Yorkshire numpty. Poor Fugs having to put up with a rider who can't even be bothered to count to 9 instead of 8 :mad::mad: I think you'll find this is your penance for not confessing your sins at the ISZ numpty rider thread confessional ;)

Anyhoo - dressing down finished (as, of course, I've never done anything even remotely numptyish and clearly never will ) and I have to mention that Fugs is looking rather lovely and I think is destined to be something of a star in the future.

See you at Bramham :D

I just love this horse, even if he is trying to join HH's lofty heights, hope it's not bay genes.

You have a super horse for the future and it's best to get the mistakes over now rather than at 4*

As above, at least you're getting it out of your system now. Would be soooo much worse to miss a fence sj at 3*. :)

On the upside, you both look very good and Fugs looks, well, not Fugly at all. He looks regal, so there. ;)

looking great in the photos :D
Dont beat yourself up too much more, after all, you would MUCH rather win a PN ;) and 8th is brill :D

I think Fugly gets too much flack, I think he is very handsome :D

OK here goes again, sorry if it's long! I do like the way that you all assume that I actually walked the Sjing course.....

DHB - I can pay cash if that helps my score? ;) Walking is going good, I'm yet again going to try to do a 22-mile linear section of the Wolds Way on Sunday but my transport keeps letting me down and I end up walking sligtly shorter circular routes. My first day on the C2C will be a 19 mile mountain slog so I really want to know that I can do that sort of distance.

BBs - it might be understandalbe if I were blonde, or had all the gear but no idea ;) ;) ;). BDs Mum's cake sounds delicious. I did meet her once, but wasn't offered any cake . BD kept trying to invite me and Fugs down for some events so maybe I should agree on the stipulation that there is cake? ;)

KatB - Thanks, but please raise your expectations a little bit. 1*? We're aiming for Badminton 2015 don't you know!

Kerilli - yes, he had a fun, educational day and doesn't know that anything went wrong. Ain't it always the way?

AB - oh, yes please, our butcher does lovely ones, but I'm sure they have waaaaaaayyy more calories than the rice crackers. Send some my way and I'll do a comparison......

Jumptoit - 3 strides? Was that on a 12.2????. Good luck!

WorMy - thanks :D, hope you're feeling better.

MB - yet another one who assumes that I walked the course!

Langside - it did feel very easy, good luck this weekend.

Fiona - although we took a stride out it didn't feel like a flyer. Just jumped in normally then found ourselves stretching a wee bit to make the stride out. I thought it was odd at the time!

M_M - kick accepted, and if you're offering to walk the course at Bramham with me...... ;)

Thistle - aw, thanks. Bay must be the new black I think! Though he'd love to end up at BD's and end up round and shiny. Did you appreciate my XC steward pic. I had the nice lady on the XC start and we were still having a conversation as I cantered out of the start box!

TS - it sadly doesn't make me feel any better though! Regal eh? When we get to 3* I'll ring you to come and walk the SJing with me. Deal?

Cake, Cheesy scones...or just so that she can bully you into buying fancy 5 point breastplates like she did me...
"Oh it will really suit Snoopy" was her unhelpful, trying to save me money tips she gave me.

She did mention 'Buckminster 5yo class' and 'staying over' in the same sentence (and as you were on the other end of the phone call you can be my witness!). Maybe you could come up too and we could all sit around at BD's house and eat cake? :D

Oo goodie, that sounds like a perfect plan :D

I did hear all sorts of things.. I take it the Baydale bus will be taking a further two more? Will we have time for cake? MEEP! lol

fantastic result, well done!!!

Im glad to see the have got rid of that horrible ditch at the second last too which always struck me as a bit of a pointless place in the course to have it!

I too am strugging with combinations and striding at the moment......autumn managed to bounce both parts of a one strided treble tonight and whacking them up doesnt seem to put her off either :-s

im quite concerned to hear your jumping 1.15 at home though, im entered for bramham and havent done a full 1.05 course yet! our practise will probably be hambleton the week before - i am officially poo-ing myself haha.

gorgeous xc pics too - he clearly is loving it!

I really wish I could go to Hambleton. I'm working and just can't get out of it :(. I had Pikey (the coloured 5yo) lined up for a coloured class too. Oh, and just because we're jumping 1.15 doesn't mean that we always leave them all up :p.

See you at Bramham! :D

im just praying i dont manage to take random strides out and not go flying through the fences something like superman. Im seriously hoping the grand occasion might help shrink the giant strides a bit!

I was typing on my mobile (yes I know I'm sad!), 1 and 4 are right next to each other don't you know ;)

Anyway, I'd hope you would learn to count by the time you've jumped enough courses to qualify for 4* ;)

Well perhaps you should have 'fessed' up earlier and then this wouldn't have happened ;) Honesty really is the best policy. Old Git - quick get yours in before your next comp just in case I have jinxed everyone

In the scheme of things this is no disaster, but understand your frustration at missing a placing. You know what they say - a mistake is fine - just never make it again :p :p Perhaps I would do well to remember that myself

Apologies Gamebird as ISZ post may have something to do with my oh dear first BE report :( Sorry.
Fugly is looking very good especially XC, love the one stride in the two strided double :D and if you want you are more than welcome to join the 'I can't ride for toffee at a competition' clan that I think I should be the founder member of after Wednesday :p:D
