hi guys i have a question and i believe some one on here might be able to answer it lol, i might be buying an irish draught what has just been gelded today, (2 year old) his dam and sire are both RID how do i get him RID? and does it put value on the horse? thanks x ps i dont know for deffo if im having him yet so if any one knows of any other ID or maybe ID x youngsters that may be for sale please let me know thanks

I'll get shot down in flames for this but personally I find ID's pig ignorant! Make sure that is def what you want before you buy... if you can lead him out first to see how nappy he is so much the better.

Lol, Polotash, I say that about every dumblood I've ever met, they're all thick as planks without a brain too. Give me an ID any time, far more personality that you can work with unless of course, you like working with things that are so dumb they don't know school work is boring.

TBH, don't see much point in the expense of grading a gelding and if both parents are RID doesn't it follow that their stock should be too, grading shouldn't come into it surely it's just whether you opt for their inspections to grade up?

The breed name is shown in many different ways - RID Registered Irish Draught. vs ID Irish Draught. I would say his value would be enhanced if he has been properly registered with the relevant IDHS Irish Draught Horse Society (GB), or the pukka Irish, society.

I'm with Maesfan - give me an ID everytime! Mine have fantastic temperaments and a real can do/will do attitude!

I don't think I would bother grading him either now - as he can't be used for breeding it's unlikely to have affect on what you might do with him.

yes, but some people like to compete in classes only open to registered ID horses. If he has no paperwork to back up his breeding, he can't compete in those classes, they have performance as well as showing classes.

yet my irish mare is a loony and my warmblood x hackney is a saint lol

Surely, if he has RID parentage both sides and his passport is with the IDHS then he will be accepted as a full Irish Draught, not a part bred so will be eligible for any ID classes?

Polotash please stand still whilst I load my gun, I can't find my specs so make sure you are brightly dressed so I can see you, I must try to not shoot the cat by mistake !!

The OP's purebred 2 year old gelding, assuming nothing has changed since mine was registered a few years ago, will have a passport number starting with SID xxxxx.

My horse was a purebred and registered as a gelding on the Supplementary Irish Draught Register as soon as he was gelded.

My horse was shown in hand and ridden in the purebred classes at county level and the breed show. His SID passport was overstamped by SHGB and he then competed in open ridden hunter classes at county level.

Don't care what anyone says, the best horses that ever look through a bridle are Irish Draughts. I have my tin hat on and no you cannot borrow my gun to shoot me !!!

Will have to introduce you to our Pop then - he definitely isn't thick! Mind you, I like IDs too, although must admit that OH's horse (who is half ID) is not particularly blessed in the brain department, but perhaps that comes from the other side of his breeding!

so would i need to send the passport back off to somewhere? or?? sorry about being thick haha :o

Not thick at all especially if you're not used to breed passports. New owners should do a change of ownership within 30 days of buying the horse. Where you send your passport to (and the fee, they're all different) depends entirely on who issued the passport in the first place, the address and details of what you need to do should be inside the passport somewhere although you might have to ring/check website as to the fee. In your case it should be the IDHS, yes? If not, let us know which passport has been issued for him.

*********** Always make sure that you photocopy each page of the passport that has details of horse, ownership, vet work and jabs done so that if the worst happens and it's lost then you have a copy of it so you can get a duplicate. Also send it as a signed for package so that you know they receive it. Can't stress that enough, always make copies before you send it off, it's so much hassle and heartbreak if you don't.

LOL..............I am a converted dumblood lover to ID ( above-so true)

OP it gets quite complicated with the RID grading etc but I bought 2 weanlings one was a purebred he has a passport from the IDHS and also has been dna tested his sire was RID but the mare was AID (appendix but still ID) not good enough for grade 1 so that means he is a purebred ID but not a RID (grade 1) as far as i understand it but he is eligible for purebred show classes etc but only the sports horse register should I want to have him graded no point as he is a gelding.

BTW Polotash ? I have 3 IDs none of whom have ever been nappy, previously had a danish warmblood nappiest thing on the planet

That comment makes me smile and reminds me of a statement my riding instructor came out with when I lost my wonderful ID and starting looking for another horse.

The instructor was dressage based and schooled many a warmblood and rider for british teams. She said to me, don't get buying a warmblood as you are not capable of riding them. Fair enough comment as I am less than average on a good day. I thought she meant warmbloods are so talented and clever they would be far too much horse for me.

What she actually meant was a warmblood was so thick and unable to think for itself, it would not be able or willing to help me out like my irish horses do and I certainly need a horse to help me out at times. It was actually very sound advice for me, my confidence or lack of, and my requirements from a horse.

My 2 irish horses helped me out time and time again. I am windy and had a terrible habit of not riding forwards enough but those Id's just said 'hold my mane we will be fine' and if I had picked a hedge that was a a bit too big, the old boy would grind to a halt very gradually in a straight line because he knew full well he could not jump it from the half cocked canter we would be in. We would then wait for the top to be knocked out and off we go again, eyes shut and a hand in his mane. RIP old boy, you were simply the best.

That could be considered quite offensive.

Perhaps you need to meet some more higher end of the market horses :)

My warmblood is the most amazing horse that I could ever have wished for; she is bursting with personality, keen to please, a tough, stoical girl, and incredibly intelligent.

My ISH is a wonderful creature too, but not as smart or brave.

Yeah, but as an Id owner, I found what Polotash said quite offensive!!

I love Irish horses. Mine is incredibly brave. And quick thinking. He never throws his toys out of his pram thou. He will go anywhere alone and new situations never phase him. Always tries his best for me and when I much things up jumping etc, always gets me out of it :)
