Hi there everyone,

Just a quick post, I am taking my ex race horse Frank to his first ridden show tomorrow (he went to his first ever show last week inhand) I've decided last minute I'm going to enter him into the ridden hunter class as a few of my friends from the yard are doing it, so I decided to give it a go. I'm not expecting anything from it but would just like to see how well he behaves and get him used to the show atmosphere. Anyway, would I look out of place with my point two air jacket on over my tweed jacket in a ridden class? I'd normally wear it hacking etc and I am hacking over there to the show and wouldn't really want to leave it whilst we entered the class, so what would you do? Take it and wear it or just leave it at home?

It probably sounds a really stupid question, but I've never shown before so really don't know what to do lol!

I can not advise except to say I would ALWAYS wear my jacket! I was once asked to remove it at a dressage comp. I asked the lady if she would pay for me for the rest of my life, should my horse trip, fall and break my back. She said....when you put it like that...keep it on!

You may get away with it at local level but beyond that yes you would look out of place and the judge most likely wouldnt be impressed

You could argue that its for safety and it shouldnt make a difference but sadly it does - tradition is key especially in hunter classes

Haha! Thanks! I know well all I was thinking was, if I don't wear it, something's bound to happen! 😂😂 I can imagine I'll need all the help I can get! It's only a local show, so I'm sure they won't be too strict, I just don't want to look an idiot that's all! Thanks for your help!

You probably would be the only one in the class wearing one but don't let that stop you, if you want to wear it then do. If not you could ask the secretary to look after it for you, they're usually pretty helpful.

Thanks WelshD I did think that, to be honest I'll prob look out of place with him anyway in a hunter class but just wanted to try him and see how he goes, more for behaviour really. Thanks for your help! 😊

It won't be classed as correct and you may well get marked down for it, but if you aren't bothered about placings then I would wear it for your peace of mind.

Just an aside - but ex racers *usually aren't quite substantial enough to be classed as hunters (though obviously there are exceptions) so in future riding horse classes may be more suited.

Good luck anyway, and enjoy your day. :-)

Wear it, you can explain to the judge, when you get to your individual show, that it is his first ridden show and you hacked there. The judge will understand. I wonder if it will take someone to e seriously injured before the bigger shows stop looking down on those riders who wear safety equipment, rather than following tradition.
A bit different but I have recently noticed more and more children wearing BPs in WH classes, including the showing phase.

Thanks Moonin1, I know he's not really the hunter type, just I'm just treating it as a practice really, ideally I'd like to enter him into RoR classes next season once he's built up some topline and we've had more practice, he's been on box rest for the last two months so I know he's not in the best condition, this is him last weekend, he won his first ever rosette, he got a second so was really proud of him! Lol

Fantastic to hear he behaved, and you enjoyed yourselves!

I think looking at the pics he probably would do a little better in the riding horse classes if they do them, as he is a smidgeon light for a hunter. A nice coloured browband would go well on him too.

A word of advice re your turnout too - you need some long black boots rather than the country boots as they will mark you down quite a bit too.

Thanks Moomin1 yes I know I need some black boots! I need to get some asap, it was a last minute decision to enter but I'll def have some on my Xmas list lol! I know he's too light for the hunter classes, hopefully he'll be ok in the normal ridden classes and hopefully I'll be able to do some ROR with him too, which should be better for him! Thanks for you help, I left the point two at home! Thankfully all was ok! 😂
