Ridden lead rein showing! advice please....

Hi All

I am new to this site so a big HELLO!

I was looking for some advice. I have a 5 year old Welsh Sec A, he has only been broken to ride for a year. I wanted to enter him into local ridden classes this year with my friends 10 year old daughter.

As my friends daughther is not that confident and Harley has only been broken for a year, I want them to enter a lead rein class.

As she is 10 is there any lead rein classes that she can compete in as I have looked on the internet and it states that lead rein is only for 9 years and below. This doesnt seem very fair to me. It is only local shows that I want to compete at.

Any ideas?

Id check the show schedule for the local show you want to enter to see if they as an individual show set age guidelines, they normally do but just double check.
If she isnt young enough then maybe just show him inhand and see how he responds to the situation and get a jockey to bring him on a bit before the next show??

You never know he might suprise you!

Hi there - I'm in NI so I don't know if it is the same where you are, but some of our local shows have lead rein classes which allow older children to enter. It is the affiliated shows where they keep very strictly to the age limits. Sometimes there are also 'family pony' classes where the children can be lead and they are judged on the manners of the pony rather than conformation. Good luck.
 
I would suggest pick up as many schedules as you can for local shows, and look at other local venues online and scrutinise the small print - whilst most say under 10, it can be 10 and under or it can be under 10 at a certain date so she could be 10 and still enter - it does vary from show to show.
 
Thank you for the replies, we are just waiting for the schedules to be released, I checked out there rules but didnt say the ages so I presume they must be on the schedule.

I have already shown him in hand last year and he did really well, but this year wanted to see how he would get on in ridden classes. :-)

You could look at doing some fun classes where you are allowed on the lead rein, turn out classes and fancy dress classes for example. Hopefully a couple of good experiences and your little jockey will have the confidence to do some first ridden classes.
 
Will they ask for her age if she looks young enough? i've never seen anyone asked for proof of age that their child is under a certian age.. 9/10 - i'm sure no one would be able to tell for that extra year..
