Before comments start about my weight, I weigh 8 1/2 stone, I have been cleared by 3 seperate vets a physio and the ponys breeder that ted can happily carry my weight.

It wasn't as dark as the photos make it look and yes is was lightening, We did a little jump to try out his saddle sorry about the runnish photos.

CC is welcome as always

10st?! Jesus, I know they're strong but its not good for their joints etc to carry so much weight. I have a 10hh shetland and weigh the same as you but pay a girl who is no more than 6st to ride him. Good luck with him tho looks sweet x

Think he cope with 8 1/2 stone weight, as I imagine you will be riding for 'typical' lengths of time, not backbreaking hours of work.

My shetland carries me FINE and did so even when I was heavier :)

With continued work, the fitness will improve and Ted (cute name!) will be as ever capable.

Perhaps we could aim for a pas de deux?! ;)

Due to broadness of the pony you do look ok but I cant imagine it being very comfortable. Not sure about doing too much of the jumping however if he is a little b.........r I can completely understand why you are riding him. But not for too long a time..but you do look ok...also how you ride is important and you look like you ride light(ie not a sack of potatoes)

I am glad you listen to your vet, who has gone through years of training to get where they are now.

If your vet says it is fine, then carry on, you do not have to explain yourself to ANYONE else.

Cute pictures.

:D

The jump was to test his new saddle, which is why it was tiny :)

I think he looks lovely, and I couldn;t see his legs giving way under you. If the vet and physio have said you're ok to ride him, then thats good enough I think.
Shetlands aren't delicate little flowers.
Kx

For drying out loud!! Its a blooming shetland they are built to carry considerable weight for their height. Dartmoor ponies were used to carry prisoners over the moors and my darty is more than capable of carrying 12 stone and he is a show pony. My only criticism would be that if you were showing the over all picture would be spoiled just because you are small. But I have seen plenty of fat kids that ride that a sack of spuds bouncing on a fine little welshies back and noone says a word because they are young. I am sure if he had any pain or found you too heavy he would let you know in no uncertain way!! What do you plan to do with him?

Would far rather see a shetland like this being worked and kept fit and healthy by an adult than languishing in a field getting fat and laminitic, that would be far worse for him than carrying a weight which is greater than some people believe he should have to carry. Especially as his vet has cleared him for a higher weight.

We ride my 10.2hh Shettie X, daughter and I both around 9st. She drives so very fit, but she so enjoys going out with the big ponies that she comes too about once a week, only for about 30-40 minutes. I would happily pay a good smaller rider, but they are like hen's teeth and agree with the poster who'd rather see a slightly over burdened pony than a bored, fat, laminitic one.

You look a tad underhorsed:p

Nice to see one working and getting fit though, and you don't seem unbalanced. If he gets tired, you could always just take your feet out of the stirrups and walk:D

What do you plan to do with him?

Just keep him fit really, owner is in the process of breaking him to drive but has had to stop and he gets fat on thin air, been hacking him out with other ponies as he is quite nappy. He is shown in hand very regularlay and qualified for the The royal london show , he scrubs up very well :) If I was smaller I would of liked to do ridden M and M but I am too big :( He is 41" at the withers :)

I think he is fine to carry you! he looks very happy in the photos and as someone else mentioned better to see him this way then in a field getting fat and risking lami. You know him best and if he is happy carrying you and working then continue riding him. You don't look at all too heavy for him.

His a sweetie btw :D

I completely agree with this!

Great pictures and well done on all the hard work.

Pft! Your grand! If your balanced and ride well then there is absolutely no reason why you can't keep the little tyke fit! I ride my shetties and weigh 9st4lbs and they have absolutely no bother tanking off me when it suits!

Just out of interest what saddle did you get? I have many different types of shetland saddle and only like 2 of them.

I think he looks great. I think people totaly underestimate what little power houses shetties are. Good on you for treating him like a horse rather than a toy.
