Ridden Shetland Photos

Shetlands...In rugs.....my brain does not compute.......

Ted is in a rug today, don't shout at me though. From birth he was mollycoddled and was always overrugged to keep his short coat for showing, his new owner carried this on, me and her had stern words regarding the weight of rugs and he had no rug on yesterday and was stood at the field gate with his head down shivering.

The other horses in the field pick him up by his neck

Fly rugs :D Then my old man gets a lightweight on just to keep him dry for the winter - I don't like him getting soaked to the skin in howling winds. And then my big mare will be clipped this week so will need a rug on. The youngsters, broodmares and stallions won't wear them, they are tough as old boots lol!

You look a tad underhorsed:p

Nice to see one working and getting fit though, and you don't seem unbalanced. If he gets tired, you could always just take your feet out of the stirrups and walk:D

pmsl :D:D
Shetlands are to the horse world what jack russells are to the dog world:p deceivingly small and cute but as tough as old boots;)

They are very strong, much to the amusment of people who live near my farm, took him out on roads for the first time. I was told he was fine, which he was until we came to a cul-de-sac that I wanted to go past, but noooo ted decided we were going down into the cul-de-sac whether I wanted to or not !

You look absolutely fine. Especially as shetlands short sturdy legs means there is so much less strain on them than the long thin unnatural pipe cleaner legs that taller horses have been developed to have.

Shetlands also very very capable of telling you if they dont like something, so I think pony is happy with it too.

Think about Icelandics, the only horse breed allowed on the whole of Iceland, some of them are only 12.2 and they carry grown men. I imagine Shetlands used to, too.

Edinburgh vet school have a whole band of Exmoors the vet students ride; strangely none of them have dropped dead from the strain yet.

Far far worse to have no work and laminitis than be worked by a light adult such as yourself.

Keep up the good work!
