After a bad riding accident, resulting in a severe broken ankle and not walking for almost a year, I have not competed (my 19 year old bay) Sammi for almost 3 years now. I use to show jump, cross country and ODE with him. To ease myself back in, I fancied a bash at ridden showing.

This is where I need your help! Can anyone tell me what is involved/expected in the following types of classes please:

  1. Tack and Turnout
  2. Style, Manners and Appearance
  3. Ridden Horse/Pony

Thanks in advance! xx :)

Good for you! Ill try

tack and turnout everything from the tips of their ears to the soles of your shoes to be immaculately clean and sparkling no judge in riding and all you should have to do is walk round and stand in a line up to be inspected

style and performance - no idea sorry hope someone else can help

Ridden horse - take into account manners, way of going, overall appearance, confirmation and probably your riding and overall appearance.

Hope this helps and also why not try a veteran class? Most of the time they have smaller numbers.

Good luck :-)

Thank you very much for your response Asommerville. :)

Ah, so tack and turnout wouldn't even involve trotting. That will be a good first class to settle him in. My problem is I don't know which would be the better class for him after that as I'm confused what is the difference between the latter two classes I mentioned in my OP.

The reason I mentioned only the classes I have is because the local show around the corner only do a small number of showing classes, and those are the only ridden one's on the schedule. However, if Sammi takes well to it, I may consider going further a field and enter a veteran class.

Fingers crossed it goes well. For the last couple of years I have had my coloured youngster Rox out inhand showing. He is going to be broken this year, then the plan is to do ridden showing with him next year. Another reason why I want to test the water with Sammi first! xx

I think style and performance might be similar to the ridden class you mentioned but those classes in my area have always seemed to involve a course of jumps then a walk trot and canter...but maybe different at your show

turnout defo shouldnt involve anyyhing other than a walk..unless you get a wacky judge! You can canter when you win though :-) good luck

Oh I see! That being the case I think I will stick to just the simple ridden horse class. I might have a word with the organisers of the show and ask how they do it. Having said that, you make a very valid point.... it all depends on the judge! :D

Thank you very much for the good luck vibes, I'm praying we take to the showing world well together. I have been trying to practice, schooling vigorously, and trying to tidy up my riding style in preparation. xx
