Hello, please can anyone advise what specifically the judge will be looking for in the in-hand section of a ridden showing class? Would they have a check-list in mind? Thanks in advance :)

The in-hand trot up, and the strip/stand-up beforehand, is so the judge can see the whole horse, his limbs, conformation, and natural movement without the influence of the rider. In the walk away, turn and trot back the judge will specifically be looking at the straightness of the movement, the flight of each hoof/leg, and how he uses himself over all his body.

It is important that the horse leads and trots calmly and powerfully on a loose-ish rein so that his head and neck stay straight and he can stretch and lower his head. I wish more people would take the time to work with their horses for this phase as often it is when a final decision will be made. In hand training is essential if the most is to be made of it.

This by the bucket load! It's amazing how many people spend hours and hours going round in circles perfecting their horses ridden performance but when it comes to the trot up the horse doesn't budge! The strip is just as important as the ride!
