Ride and lead in a Pessoa or side reins?

It's an idea to keep the led horse a bit straighter and have more contact on the outside as he tends to jog banana style!
 
Sounds like an accident waiting to happen! Though jogging banana style is not fantastic at least there are no extra bits to get caught in riders foot or anywhere else.
 
No defiantly not the Pessoa very damaging for the horse .
I have led in side reins when I had to ,Fatty as a young horse was awful to lead but it had to be done when he had his heart problem in the end in desparation I strapped him in side reins and strapped his mouth tight shut ( he bit the other horse continuously) which did the job .
I always had someone else on another horse to assist if necessary and I had a rock solid hunter to ride .
To try to aid schooling I would not do it but if you are alert and your ride horse is good it’s perfectly doable .
 
No - too many lines to get caught on your foot. Absolutely not in a pessoa - I disagree with Goldenstar on its use - but if fitted correctly the lines have to be loose and bringing that close to another horse would be an accident waiting to happen. Personally I would not in side reins either because of the risk of catching your foot in them and either jerking the horse in the mouth or worse.

Can you enlist the help of a friend and correct the lead horse from the other side? If safe you could pick up the pace - few led horses can mess about if you are moving.
 
A Pessoa is not designed to be worn for long periods out and about it’s designed for short work on the lunge in the the school mainly in the canter ,to use it in a hacking situation would be incredibly damaging to the horses walk .
 
On that point I do agree. It is not for use for a long period. Sorry Goldenstar - I took your response to be a more generic "hate pessoas for any reason". I know views are mixed on them.
 
I have used side reins to ride and lead a very naughty pony-they were clipped to rings on a roller. it worked and the size difference was such that they weren't near my foot. the little so and so would jog, try and get in front and cross under the lead horses neck without them.
 
Good points re getting a foot caught. I won't.
Can't pick up the pace no, he's rehabbing a leg injury so it's 30 min slow walk only ATM
 
If you tie the side reins to a leather boots lace it will break very easily under a little pressure I used to do that when I was starting horses .
 
Certainly not the pessoa, side reins might work depending on heights, but as GS suggests, you'd want them to have a "breakaway" component - some half-cut baler twine or laces if they snap easily enough. If you're not on the road, can you swap sides to work him more evenly? That's what I used to do when I was worried about the same issue.
 
Well apparently I'm an idiot! Little horse led like an absolute angel today for the first time ever!
Suspect he's been online and read my plan ��
Pretty sure it won't last but so pleased with him today being his first time out since early Feb he was a star. Plan to do the same tomorrow (just in a bridle) and get on him on Tuesday. He tried to jog a little bit to be fair only in our usual trot spots so can't complain at that.
