Ride and Lead

What do you use for the lead horse when you are riding and leading? I use a lunge caveson for the 2 that are cooperative and then there is the fat s*d that is a git coz he either shuffles along avoiding my attempts to get him to shuffle faster or he is trying to p*ss off (usually in a different direction) so he has a bit with the lunge line fed over the top of his head.

This works fine if he is carting but when i am dragging him behind me i find its too much so any suggestions? I need some length so when he whips around i dont get pulled off but find a full length lunge line a bit of a handful. I am under vet instruction to try to get him fitter without riding but have nowhere to lunge him. i also need suggestions of what to put on his head that will control the tantrums but wont stop him going forwards when in refusing to move mode

I think my fantasy of an electrified pessoa that zaps him up the bum( like a horsewalker ) will prove impracticable

I use a bridle with the outside rein passed through the bit and led from both together

Chancer is lead with his bridle and I put his choke chain through the bit and attach this to an old draw rein. Gives me plenty of control and enough lead if I need it.

I used to put the lead over the front of the saddle horn on the western saddle - fantastic as if he ever did not want to follow, I could drag him along with Cairo and he very quickly learnt it was pointless not to go with the lead horse.

When I used to take Cairo out off Jemima, he just went in his headcollar (we were not on roads) as he was always so good and to be honest a horse his size could have taken off and dragged Jemima behind him even with a bridle. Cairo loved being taken out like this - like walking a huge dog.

If he goes well with the lunge line over the head I'd stick with it but cut the line short.

I just use headcoller and leadrope normally

Bridle with a leadrope threaded through the bit clipped on to the other side.
You have to watch insurance if you go on the roads in anything but a bridle, some can be funny about it.

Larry is lazy to lead too, so when I ride Banana & lead Larry he wears his normal bridle with reins removed or twisted into throatlash and a long polo-style lead rope through nearest bit ring and clipped onto other side of bit. This works and enables me to give him a little tug when he's trailing behind and also keep him in line when he tries to get out of trotting/cantering.

I use a Dually halter and a leather lead rein which I've extended with a piece of webbing lunge line that has a knot on the end. That way when lead horse stops quickly e.g. for a wee, the lead rein can thread through hand safely (stopping my arms being stretched and being pulled out of sockets!) but knot stops me losing it altoghether.

I managed to find an extra long and thick lead rein with a large knobbly bit at the end, I clip this on the outside bit ring and thread it under her chin and through the other. Both mine are good as gold to lead (well they do it nearly everyday!) except Trixie will suddenly stop, no warning to do a poo and inevitably the rein gets yanked out of my hand!
