After a long ride this morning where my poor horse was attacked by flies, I was thinking about a fly mask. I would like one with ears. Any pros/ cons? Any anyone tried and tested? Would appreciate recommendations, thank you.

I've used a normal one for hacking and one of the tassle ones, I used them for a while with no problems but I think dark cars were harder for my horse to see in them and he started to get worried by dark cars coming towards him so personally I wouldn't recommend them and carry a bottle of fly spray with me instead.

Mine has equine asthma and when the pollen is bad I ride her in her ordinary Shires one; this one provides really good coverage for her nostril area which is helpful. Not all do.

Did try a Cashel one; however found the nose-covering bit very disappointingly didn't provide anything like adequate coverage for the muzzle area. Shame.

Update on riding in my fly mask!! It worked beautifully!! Rode round the woods this morning and we weren't bothered by flies round his head, just his body!!

I bought a massive bottle of citronella spray as the yard has often run out. Before mounting, I put some on my fingers and rub it round the mare's eyes. Then after I have mounted, the YM will spray my legs and that seems to keep the flies off the horse's tummy. It is most difficult in walk. Trotting dislodges the flies.

I regularly rode a horse in a mask all year round; I was told that he had eyes that were very sensitive to the sunlight (although now that I think about it, he wasn't wearing a mask when I went to see him this afternoon).
