Rider advice...Pay vet fee's or Not?

The horse could have slipped in the field, got cast in the stable, god only knows what they get up to when we aren't looking!

Ps that was a smart way to get the other perspective on your situation!

Thanks Minimilton, i like ot try and see things from others point of view, brings a different perspective to things.

Very clever ;)
Got to admit, I did think you were a pretty mercenary person!

If I was you, I'd be upset by the fact she thinks your riding has injured her pony (ie suggesting you are a bad rider), but I'd be angry that she thought this and decided it was ok to let her pony be subjected to that.

Absolutely NO WAY should you pay. As said, anything could've happened to the pony out in the field, in the stable...You'd have to do a pretty good job to injure it by riding it badly. Think of all the riding school horses who get lumped with the beginners, they don't end up crippled.

I agree with rebel- tell her to jog on :)

Thats an interesting point, and one which i was thinking about.....the owner has never considered or spoke to me about not riding the horse, because of anything i was doing wrong, so they would have been responsible for NOT letting me ride it.

There's a few things ive been given pointers over - looser contact, talk more, sit back/straighter, heels down/be firmer and more assertive.......that's the development areas for my riding apparently...

I think every rider can safely say they've been there with those areas!

The owner hasnt said anything as of yet, however, it may have been implied....

Ah. We clearly have uncovered how you injured her horse. Had you talked to it more, it would still be fine :p

If I had someone coming over to ride my horse and I wasn't happy with how they were riding it, I wouldn't let them carry on riding it! Being a wimp, I'd probably say "oh, no longer need help exercising him" (even if that was a lie) rather than "yer cr*p, gerroff me 'oss!" It's her responsibility to ensure she is happy with how her horse is being ridden.

And as you said, everyone has been there with those points you mentioned.

She sounds like a money grabbing old bag. If she does actually tell you she wants you to pay, laugh. Lots.

PMSL! That's funny, yes, I need to talk to the horse more :-)
We certainly all do have things to work on, and she's helped me with those things, so she fully knew what they were....of which, im pretty sure that any of those things ive mentioned, would not injure or make the horse lame, being ridden 12 times that long a time period.

I dont think she's money grabbing, she's not nasty, but i think she'd think that because id been riding said horse, that i should have to pay....

and yes, that's if she does actually say that, but at the moment it was just an 'imply' towards it.

I just wanted to get some advice so i knew what to say if it did happen.

Well, for your sake, I hope she doesn't, but I don't understand how anyone in their right mind can think that someone riding their horse a few times over the last few months could injure it. By that count, riding school horses would all be complete cripples!

Good luck :)

Good news!

Got a message from owner yesterday, the owner said that he is now sound!

The owner was out with the him yesterday and said there's no issues other than he needs to build a wee bit of muscle.

Thank you all so much for your replies, I was very worried over this situation, but it looks like disastor has been averted!

And more importantly, the horse is fine!

Yay!

Good news. However, once bitten, twice shy, be careful about agreeing to ride the horse again. There are plenty of owners looking for someone to help exercise their horses.

Yes I agree totally! And i'll make sure i have a proper agreement in place etc, rather than having to potentially worry about this kind of thing! That way the rules are set out from the start and there's no ambiguity!

Hmm, the last time I looked, hiring out a horse for financial gain is illegal if you don't have a council permit like every other riding school in the country has to have.

Surely that means part loaning or sharing is illegal?
I'm sure it isn't.

I'm pretty sure it's classed as 'contribution towards keep' - that's what loaning or sharing would is...

I did know someone before who had 2 horses and 4 sharers, each with set days on the horses - £10 a day, min 3 days a week each. That meant that they were making 60 a week per horse. That would have been £480 a month, livery was costing £25 a week per horse in the summer months, £30 in winter with no extras to pay...

So it was maybe all about the money for them, making between £200-£240 a month. Horses were well loved and well looked after, but still, not sure i'd agree with that aspect of making the money from sharing them, as its not really a contribution then is it?
