Rider death first aid questions

Fair enough. We must agree to disagree on this one!

I just find the whole fact she managed to stab him up to 12cms into his body quite excessive. Its not a flesh wound and whilst she may not have intended to kill him, its obvious she intended to do him serious harm. I liken it to the killing of Damelola (sorry for spelling)..who ever stabbed him in the leg probably didnt mean to kill him but they would be tried for murder. The court didnt believe her story of self defence as they said the angle of the knife was wrong. If she had been seen to be truly defending herself then wouldnt she have been aquitted? I assume you are a criminal barrister??You seem to know a lot about the circumstances (ie your last para) so assume you have a copy of the judgement?? Im afraid I am only going on press reports, rightly or wrongly.

I realise your point but I suppose I just feel more strongly for the family of someone who had a relation taken away in such violent circumstances. Of course it is tragic when someone dies from an accident, but I do believe in what goes around comes around, hence my original post.

Well good luck with the exams! I too have a great interest in the law..I defend high value personal injury claims...makes for a very interesting job (if a little gory at time!)

Has probably helped towards making me a cynical old cow !! LOL

Well given she only served 18 months and was convicted of manslaughter, not murder, I would guess there is considerably more to it than a cup of coffee and the killing was in fact considered partially justifiable...

I find it terribly sad, and horribly sensationalist that that's how the press describe her in covering her death; not to mention quoting the man's family as taking pleasure in her death... Her poor children.

Actually I had considered it. Given that the news reported that there wasnt enough evidence to justify either provocation or self defence, I think that tells a lot. Plus, the angle of the knife was wrong according to the forensic evidence. Killing someone else is inexcusable in my opinion, whatever the reason. You always have a choice to walk away.
 
I am not sure that what has happened in her past is really relevant to her sad death, all it has served to do, both in the press and here, is overshadow the clear message that riding is dangerous and that everybody who rides should have a basic grasp of first aid. Even wearing a body protector might have saved her life....

...whether you consider her life to have been one worth saving or not is a different subject
 
Yet carrying a mobile holds its own dangers apparently - a paramedic friend of mine told me about internal injuries being caused by a mobile clipped to the waistband of johds, when the person fell, and landed on it, it caused more injuries than it would have prevented. Now if everyone had to carry a mobile, in true silent mode (seen lots of horses take exception to Vivaldi / Nokia ring tone etc) in a leg holser...maybe. Although the pleasure rides I have done, I would be hard pressed at times to know where in the wood / fields I was, so I can easily see it taking 30 mins for medical help to arrive "just past a big tree" (an actual phone call I got to the riding stables when someone came off their horses and needed help finding the horse)
 
I agree..having landed on a mobile in my pocket and the subsequent tearing of muscle from the hip bone.. I can vouch for that! I suppose you can always attach it to the saddle...not that uselul if horse disappears into the distance however. I think they can trace calls on mobiles pretty quickly tho nowadays. Its never easy in the middle of now where tho!
 
Im probably going to get shot down for this, but does anyone think that the woman was on a horse that was way out of her league? Horse was known to be flighty, was an ex racehorse that they knew would try to out run other horses. Im sorry but what did she expect when she asked to canter? The horses training came into play.

I carry a mobile no matter where i go, i wear tops that have pockets in the sleeve so i can carry it when riding.

She only had the horse for about 2 weeks, how could she possibly know the horse by then?

I totally agree, and this comes back to the earlier comment I made about her parents not wishing to understand that what happened came down to her choices on the day, and was nobody else's fault.

Fun rides can be anything but.

Totally agree. Although I would think that the small ones nowadays are less likely to cause serious injuries. I would have thought strapping it to your calf would be the best place.

A friend of mine had her mobile attached to her saddle. Not much good to her when she fell off and horse bolted!

I normally carry my mobile in an inside pocket in a jacket or bodywarmer.

My worst injury to date though is the time I came off with the yard keys in my breeches pocket on a metal key fob - broke my hip and sliced through a lot of muscle.
